Citation: "I would show him that I was his daughter." (Fleishman). I think this quote shows how sensitive Kim really is. She says how her father never knew her because he died when Kim wasn't even alive. She had no memories to cry for, but still, she cried. She wanted to show her father who was his daughter, so she wanted to plant, just like her father. Her sister and her mother cried and told Kim memories about her father, but, she still didn't know who he was. She decided she would go to this vacant lot and plant 6 lima bean seeds to show her father that she was really his daughter.

Citation: "And after twenty years typing for the Parole department, I just about knew what she’d buried. Drugs most likely, or money, or a gun." (Fleishman). I think this quote shows that Ana is a little bit prejudice because of the things she has seen through her window or the things she had been typing for the Parole department. Here, she had been thinking that Kim was planting drugs or money. But, really, Kim was only planting lima beans for her father.

Citation: “I scraped up a ring of dirt around the first plant, to hold the water and any rain that fell.” (Fleishman). I think that this quote shows that Wendell is a very helpful person. He helped Ana do something she couldn’t do, he watered Kim’s plants. And he helped Kim, water her plants. I think this really shows how helpful he can be. This also shows how bossy Ana could be. She is making Wendell go water some little girl’s plants. And, they don’t even know the little girl.

Citation: "The older you are, the younger you get when you move to the United States." (Fleishman). I think this quote means that Gonzalo is probably a more mature person than his father. He also said that when they were just 2 years in the United States, Gonzalo already knew English, but his father still didn't know any English. So, I think this quote really shows how Gonzalo really tried to learn English in the playground and with cartoons. While his father didn't even try to learn English.

Citation: "Just the same, I kept working on it the next day." (Fleishman). I think this quote shows that when Leona wants something to be done, she will fight for it until she gets what she wants. This quote also shows that Leona can be a hard working person when it comes to something she wants. In conclusion, Leona is a hard working person, that will fight for what she wants.

Citation:"The woman beside me told me the land was for anyone who wanted a garden. Even more unbelievable. The word “paradise” came out of my mouth, without thinking." (Fleishman). I think this quote shows that Sam is someone who likes when different people from different ethnicities, get together, helping each other. In this case, he is loving how every person with different race, nationality is getting together to make a nice garden. He loves how people help each other, in separated places, but they are still together.

Citation:"My father, he always has a smile on his face and a plan moving in his head." (Fleishman). This quote shows how Virgil likes his father a lot, likes how his father is really optimistic and thinks about positive things. Virgil loves how his father is always really happy. Like he said, he always has a smile on his face. He likes how they try and plant the lettuce and he just likes to be positive when he can.

Citation:"I always like being with people." (Fleishman). I think that this quote shows that Sae Young, loves people, no matter their nationality, race, etc. She likes being around people all the time. She likes being with her husband and working in her dry clean shop with him. She loves how she doesn’t have to speak English that much. But can be practicing, at the same time.

Citation:"Can’t help being born with this body, or living three doors down form Kapp’s gym." (Fleishman). I think that this quote shows that Curtis loves his body. Like he said, he can’t help being born like that. I think that he is really proud about 2 things; his body, and his tomatoes. In this chapter, Curtis grows tomatoes so that he can impress Lateesha. Lateesha is a girl Curtis likes.

Citation:"His eyes gained back some of their life. He weeded and watered with great concentration." (Fleishman). I think this quote shows that Nora is a very helpful person, she is helping Mr. Myles, gain his youth back. She thinks people get old when they think they are old. When a person thinks they are young, they can become young very easily. If they think, they can do something, they will be able to do that thing.

Citation:"Because of the baby I’m as fat as a wrestler." (Fleishman). This quote shows that Maricela hates the fact that she will be getting fatter and fatter because she is pregnant. This shows that she hates being pregnant and wants all of that to end. She doesn’t want to abort, but she wishes her baby to die, but naturally.

Citation:"The object in America is to avoid contact, to treat all as foes unless they’re known to be friends." (Fleishman). This quote shows that Amir is a little bit prejudice towards how people in America behave. He is saying that there is no contact there unless you are friends of the people. He doesn’t know if all of the people in America behave this way.

Citation:"My great-grandparents walked all the way from Louisiana to Colorado." (Fleishman). I think this quote shows that Florence admires his great grandparents because they walked from Louisiana to Colorado. I also think that he is very proud of his family. He is proud of his family because his great grandparents walked from Louisiana to Colorado.

Connection:Kim had a connection with all of the characters. But, some connections with some characters are this.

1. Ana: Kim had a connection with Ana because Ana realized she was prejudice when she found out that Kim was not planting drugs or a gun. She realized Kim was planting lima beans. When Ana realized this, she knew that she had made a huge mistake and that she should not be judging people before getting to know them or their story.
2. Florence: Kim had a connection with Florence when Florence’s hope was down because nobody was planting anymore and she saw how Kim was still planting her lima beans. When she saw Kim, her hope went up very quickly and she realized that there was still a chance of people to keep on planting.
3. Nora: When Nora saw how this little girl started to bring everyone together with a garden, she decided to start helping out with the garden as well. She saw how people got together and planted to make that place a bit nicer with a nice garden and nice plants.

Connection:Ana liked to watch the people outside the window a lot. One of those times, while she was watching the people through her window, she saw a girl hiding and planting something. She thought that it could be drugs or a gun or money. When she realized that it was lima beans, she realized that she was being a prejudice, she felt so bad. She felt this sort of guilt inside and started to realize that Kim’s plants were dying, so she sent Wendell, who knew a lot about planting, to water her plants and take care of them. After Wendell had taken care of the girl’s plants, she felt like she apologized to Kim that way. She felt like a huge weight had been lifted. She knew the mistake she made, and stopped to judge people before she knew their story or who they are. She knew that if Kim knew what she was thinking, she might have thought something bad about Ana.

Connection:Wendell was a very good friend of an old lady named Ana. Ana was a very bossy lady. She had thought something very bad about a little girl and now, she feels really guilty and she needs a way to apologize to this little girl. Ana thought this little girl was hiding drugs, but, she was really just panting some lima beans. When Ana realized this, she felt very bad. Some time later, she realized that the little girl’s plants were dying. So, she told Wendell to go and water and take care of the plants. This was Ana’s way of apologizing to the little girl. When Wendell went to water the plants, she saw the little girl coming, and being a little bit afraid. The little girl was afraid of Wendell. When, Wendell was actually helping this little girl water her plants and take care of the plants.

Connection:Gonzalo is this boy who thinks he is more mature than his father because when they were just 2 years in the United States, he already had learned English, but he didn’t go to school. He learned English by going to playgrounds or watching cartoons. Gonzalo’s father never even tried to learn English. He knows very little English. I think Gonzalo has a connection with his father because he talks a lot about how he is more mature than his father and about how his father needs to start thinking about learning English. I think this is a very weird situation because normally you expect the adult to be a lot more mature than the kid, but in this case, the kid is more mature. Also, people would think the kid can learn English in school. But Gonzalo doesn’t go to school and he taught himself English.

Connection:Leona is a mother of 2 kids that are in high school. She says her 2 sons are in a high school that has more guns than pencils. She has tried to change that, but, of course, they just leave her on hold until she hangs up. She fights for what she wants until she gets it. Leona has a connection with Maricela when she tells her about how Maricela is a part of nature. She plants the goldenrod and tells her about how wonderful it is to be a part of mother nature. She made Maricela stop wishing that her baby is dead. Maricela got her eyes opened by Leona. Leona made a change in Maricela’s life by saying this. She plants the golden rod and just by saying a few words, she changes someone else’s life. She actually made Maricela want her baby to be healthy and to be born. I think Leona is someone who really likes to argue for what she wants or for what she believes in.

Connection:Sam is a guy who likes when different people (people from different ethnicities, nationalities, races, religions, etc.), get together. He likes when people don’t care what is your race, your nationality, religion, etc. He liked the garden so much because all of the different people were working together to make a nice garden. Sam has a connection with all of the gardeners because he wants to make sure they are treating each other properly. But, he especially has a connection with this boy who helps him plant his pumpkins. He paid the boy to help him. The boy was a teenager named Royce. Sam let the boy have a row of his space to plant. The boy said he wanted to plant marijuana, but Sam was there to change that, and the boy ended up planting something else. I think this was a connection between the boy and Sam because Sam changed this boy's thinking, and told him to plant something else, without really making the boy to change his thoughts.

Connection:Virgil is a boy who admires his dad because he is always happy. His dad was planting a type of lettuce which they called “fancy restaurant lettuce”. I think Virgil is a chapter about his father as well, because Virgil talks about his father very often. I think the connection is between Virgil’s father and Ms. Fleck. Ms. Fleck comes to talk to Virgil’s father and they talk about the lettuce. Some time later, the lettuce started to die, but Virgil's father was not that sad. He tried to stay happy, for Virgil. Another very strong connection is the connection between Virgil and his father. I think that Virgil admires his father because he is very strong, internally.

Connection:Sae Young is a woman who had a lot of friends in Korea. She had a very large family and was never alone. She loves being around people. Sae Young and her husband had to move out of Korea, for work. In the United States, they bought a dry clean shop and worked there together. Sae Young couldn’t learn much English when she moved to the United States. I think that Sae Young doesn’t have a connection with 1 specific person, I think she has a connection with everyone she sees at her dry clean shop and with every gardener she sees in the community garden. I think Sae Young would be a very friendly and kind person. I think she likes the idea of being with these people everyday, gardening. I think she likes living in the United States and that she likes seeing people together gardening in the community.

Connection:Curtis is a boy who is very proud of 2 things: his body and his tomatoes. Curtis has a connection with 2 people in this chapter, Lateesha and Ms. Fleck. Lateesha is his ex-girlfriend, and Curtis wants to be with her again. He wants to earn her heart back. So, he starts growing tomatoes until Lateesha says she wants to be with Curtis. Another connection is when Curtis sees his old teacher, Miss Fleck. Miss Fleck has 2 connections; one with Virgil’s father and one with Curtis. Lateesha loves tomatoes, so Curtis decided he would grow tomatoes for her. Curtis wants Lateesha to come back to Curtis. Curtis wants Lateesha and him to get back together.

Connection:Nora is a british lady who moved to the United States for work. Nora is a very helpful lady. She is a nurse. She takes care of Mr. Myles. She has a way of thinking, and she believes that when a person starts thinking they are old, they start to become old. She thought Mr. Myles was already thinking about how he is old, and about how he can’t do anything. So, she wants to show Mr. Myles that he still has some good years left. So, she takes Mr. Myles to the garden and buys hollyhocks, poppies and snapdragons to plant. Mr. Myles starts realizing that he has some good years left to enjoy planting. Nora says that she can see a little bit more life in Mr. Myles eyes. Mr. Myles starts feeling better when he plants with Nora and when he goes out for a walk with Nora.

Before and after:Ana is an old lady who gets lonely sometimes. Whenever she gets lonely, she starts to get lonely, she watches outside from her window. She has seen some horrible crimes, so she thinks that everyone in that town is the same. So, she saw Kim planting and hiding, and she thought Kim was planting drugs or money or a gun. But, Kim was actually just planting some lima beans. She decided she would solve this case on her own. When she discovered that Kim was only planting some lima beans, she felt so guilty and so bad, that she asked Wendell to take care of the plants and water them. The change was that Ana realized she was being prejudice and realized she shouldn’t judge people before you know them.

Before and after:Maricela is a teenage girl who is Mexican and pregnant. She doesn’t want to abort, but she wishes her baby is dead. She is very jealous of Penny, a woman who wants to help teenage girls who are pregnant. She is jealous of Penny because she is not getting fat. Penny took them to the garden so they could see the miracle of life. But, Maricela didn’t see the miracle, and continued to wish her baby was dead. But, when she meets Leona, she realizes she is a part of nature and that it is something beautiful.

Before and after:Nora didn’t change much throughout her chapter. She likes to be helpful. She is a nurse. Nora is one of Mr. Myles’ nurses. But, she is the only one who takes him on walks. She believes an Egyptian belief which is that when a person thinks they are old, they become old. She really believes that Mr. Myles is not that old, she believes that he can still do things that other people do. So, she took Mr. Myles to the garden and made him plant. He planted for weeks and weeks. Until, finally Mr. Myles had gained life in his eyes. Mr. Myles had finally realized that he can plant and that he is still capable of doing things.

Before and after: Kim is a girl who lost her father, without even knowing him. She had no hope of having a connection with him. So, she decided to plant because her father was a farmer and he loved to plant. Kim got some lima beans they had in her house and planted them in a vacant lot. I think Kim never changed throughout her chapter. I think her thoughts changed, once she felt connected to her father, and once she felt that her father knew who his daughter was. Also, I think that she changed a lot of people’s lives, without even realizing it.

Before and after:Virgil at first, really wanted to go to summer and relax. He wanted to stay home and be lazy. But, there was a turn of events. Virgil is a boy who loves and admires his dad. He loves how he is always trying to be happy. Virgil wants to have that kind of attitude. But, when his dad’s lettuces start to rot and they are not working out, Virgil goes to try and help his dad. I think the change is that from not wanting to do anything, to going to help his dad is a very big change for him. They both thought that the lettuces would be great and they would have enough money to live until his dad gets a job. But, they did not know that it was very hard to plant this lettuces.

Before and after:I think that Leona did not change throughout her chapter. I think that there was a turn of events. Leona is a woman who fights for what she wants. She has 2 kids in high school and she claims that there are more guns than books in there. Leona really hated the fact that the vacant lot was full of trash and never got cleaned up. So, she decided to go to city hall to get the vacant lot cleaned up. She really wanted to live in a place that is clean. She had hopes to get what she wanted, because she was not going to leave until she got that place clean. By the end, she got the vacant lot clean.

Before and after: I think that Curtis changed when he wanted to get back with Lateesha but Lateesha did not want to give him her heart. She did not want to get back together with Curtis. Also, I think the change in this chapter, the change was that Curtis thought he could get Lateesha's heart back, but, unfortunately, she didn't want to get back together with Curtis. So, in this chapter, Curtis doesn't change, but, his thoughts did. He really thought and expected Lateesha and him to get back together. But, she did not want that.

Connection: Maricela is pregnant and she is jealous of Penny, the woman who tries to help these girls to like their babies. Maricela hates the fact that she has not been invited to any parties. She hates that Penny is not getting fat, and she is always so happy. She really wishes that her baby is dead. I think the connection with Penny is not a very positive connection, but, I think this is a connection between Maricela and Penny. Another connection which, in my opinion, is very strong, is the one between Leona and Maricela. Leona changed Maricela’s thoughts of being pregnant by showing her she is a part of nature. Maricela, since that moment, stopped wishing her baby was dead. I think this connection is a very positive and good connection because Leona changed someone’s thoughts and just saved a baby from dying. She finally actually likes the idea of a baby.
