Narodziny teatru Greckiego
W starożytnych Atenach co roku odbywały się Wielkie Dionizje- uroczystości ku czci boga wina, Dionizosa. W ich trakcie chóry mężczyzn i chłopców śpiewały pieśni ku czci boga Dionizosa. Z czasem do chórzystów dołączały osoby prowadzące między sobą dialogi. To byli pierwsi aktorzy. Ostatecznie przedstawienia stały się nieodłączną częścią Dionizji. W ten oto sposób około VI wieku p.n.e. narodził się teatr grecki. Teatr pełnił także funkcję wychowawczą.

Grecy przywiązywali dużą wagę do sprawności fizycznej. Twierdzili, że sport nie tylko rozwija ciało, lecz także kształtuje pozytywne cechy charakteru. Hellenowie z okazji niektórych świąt rozgrywali zawody zwane igrzyskami. Najsłynniejsze z igrzysk organizowano ku czci Zeusa w miejscowości Olimpia. Prawo do udziału w zawodach oraz wstęp na trybuny mieli tylko mężczyźni. Sportowców obowiązywały ścisłe zasady. Złamanie ich Grecy uważali jako obrazę bogów.

Wśród konkurencji podczas igrzysk najważniejsze były te które wchodziły w skład pięcioboju olimpijskiego:

Symbolem igrzysk jest ogień olimpijski. Sztafeta z ogniem olimpijskim wędruje do miasta organizującego igrzyska. Tam w dniu otwarcia igrzysk ogień rozpala znicz, który będzie płonął do końca igrzysk. Za wygraną zwycięzca dostawał wieniec laurowy.
