The United Kingdom (U.K.)consists of a group of islands off the northwest of Europe. It is a unique country made up of 4 nations: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. England, Wales and Scotland also make up Great Britain.

The Union Jack is the name of the national flag of the U.K. It is so called because it combines the crosses of the 4 countries united under one Sovereign- the kingdoms of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The cross of St. George, patron saint of England, is a red cross on a white ground. The cross of St. Andrew, patron saint of Scotland, is a diagonal white cross on a blue ground. The cross of St. Patrick, patron saint of Ireland, is a diagonal red cross on a white ground. The Welsh dragon does not appear on the Union Jack.

The U.K. has a population of more than 60 million.English is the official langage of the U.K. The largest country of the U.K. is England. There are over 130 universities, among them the most prestigious universities of Oxford and Cambridge. The U.K. contains many cultural trasures:
