Defining Antibiotic resistance

1. Clinical defination

Resistance is the ability of a bacterial strain to survive or grow during antimicrobial treatment.

2. Genetic definition

Resistance is defined by the presence of a genetic change (mutation or gene), a resistance determinant.

3. Microbiological definition

Resistance is the ability to survive or grow in higher antibiotic concentrations than most other bacterial strains of the same species .
