future forms

02

Read these examples about the future of work and pay attention to the verb forms in blue. Choose the correct options to complete the rules.

  • Nobody knows what the jobs of tomorrow might be.
  • The episode suggests that the future of work might be all in care for the elderly.
  • There will certainly be a lot of those jobs in the coming years.
  • While many jobs will be made obsolete by industrial automation, they won’t end all work.

EXPAND WHAT YOU KNOW

Expressing future predictions, possibility and probability with modal verbs.

future predictions

When we express future predictions, we can express them with different levels of certainty:

  • We use BE GOING TO when we talk about definite and firm predictions because there is evidence in the present to support them.
  • We use WILL when we talk about confident predictions but there is no evidence in the present to support them.
  • We use MIGHT, MAY, CAN or COULD when we talk about possible predictions but we are not completely sure about them. There is no evidence in the present to support them.
