POUR RACONTER UNE HISTOIRE...

J'emploie le prétérit BE + V-ing ( = BE au prétérit + forme -ing du verbe) pour expliquer le contexte d'un événement, la situation dans laquelle mon sujet se trouvait.

J'emploie le prétérit simple pour relater des événements datés et terminés ou qui se succèdent.

• Dilinger was a dangerous gangster : he stole money from banks and killed many people. One time, he jumped out of a window and escaped.
• When did he die?
• He died in 1934. The police didn't catch him alive.

• What were you doing ?
• I wasn't working behind the bar, I was looking for bottles of wine in the cellar.
