HALLOWEEN

Halloween is a holiday celebrated annually on 31st October.

So do you know what people do on Halloween Day in England?

One Halloween partygame is called ‘bobbing for apples’.

Applesare put in a big bowlfull of water. The players must take an apple out of the water without using their hands.

Jack-o-lantern

Jack-o-lanterns are empty pumpkins with eyes, a nose and a mouth and a candle put inside.

In the past, people used fires to scare away bad spirits. They believed light had power over darkness. Today, Jack-o-lanterns are used to scare away ghosts and witches.

Before using pumpkins, people carved turnips, potatoes, and beets.

Dressing up

On Halloween, people believed that bad spirits came back to Earth, and people thought they could see ghosts if they left their homes.

To avoid seeing ghosts people put on masks when they went out. That’s why, Halloween costumes are monsters like vampires, ghosts, witches and devils.

Trick or Treat

Children in costumes go from house to house in their neighbourhood, to ask for treats like sweets, lollipops, chocolates or money.

When someone answers the door, the children say: ’Trick or treat?’ This means the children will "trick" the person if the person does not give candy.
