UNDERSTANDING LOCAL NETWORKS
start
Section
Why is it important to understand our local network?
Understanding Local Networks
Our human existence and relationships are nested in both local and global networks that constitute meaning and action. In an increasingly interconnected world, we can understand ourselves only to the extent that we understand others.
NETWORKS
WHAT IS A NETWORK? A network is the group of people with whom we interact everyday.
Section
Kilduff and Tsai (2003)
Networks are analyzed in terms of:
DENSITY
- It can help us understand how connected network is compared to how connected it might be.
- The Density of a network is based on the number of connections between and among actors.
- The higher the number of connections is, the denser the system is.
DENSITY
HIERARCHY
- Actors in the network can pull their investment in social relations
- It can direct and coordinate the actions of thousands of people
- Hierarchy in network is needed to effectively deal with size and complexity
HIERARCHY
COMPLEXITY
- Is the number of nodes and alternative paths that exist within a network
- The estent to which a link between actors a multiplicity of interest in the community
- Networks are complex because of its characteristic of being ubiquitous and omnipresent
COMPLEXITY
INTERDEPENDENCE
- Interdependence happen when two or more actors impacts one another or rely with each other
- The ties in the network that can be useful in facilitating change and reform
- Interdependence facilitates cooperation
INTERDEPENDENCE
EMBEDDEDNESS
- The networks of relations within which each person is rooted including families, friends, and acquaintances
- The quality of being deeply and firmly ingrained
- This refers to the degree to which activity is constrained

Where does a Network starts?
It starts with us!
THE HUMAN BRAIN
- The Human brain is a biological neural network
- The human brain has the capacity to adjust through the 21st century environment
- The Human brain functions on how connections, relationships, and networks work.
