DEFINITION
ACQUISITION LEARNING DISTINCTION
This hypothesis is defined as a way to develop competence or a knowledge into two different ways. This hypothesis has similarities with the way how children learn English.
There are 2 ways to get the second language.
The first one is the language acquisition:
- It's a subconscious learning process.
- Learners aren't aware of the learning process.
- Learners are aware of the communicative skills they're getting.
- Learners are aware of the fact when they're using the language properly or not.
- Learners acquires a second language "imitating".
The second one is the Language Learning
It is a conscious process in which...
- Students know rules and are able to cummunicate keeping those rules in mind.
- Learners are aware of grammar rules.
- Learners want to learn more about grammar rules.
EXAMPLES
When a child is talking to their friends and listen to them talking about a game. The child doesn’t know too much about the rules or grammar to create a sentence but he is able to listen and repeat what the other kids are saying. That way he’s encourage to use the language.
When an adult learns a second language and listen to his teacher using a grammar structure to express his/her ideas about an action. For example: “I eat bread and ham for breakfast”.
The learner in that moment imitates and change the words to create more similar sentences. For example: I drink water and juice for lunch.
- An example of consciousness learning or language learning is when the teacher starts explaining why, the sentence is written in that way. So, he mentions grammar things such as personal pronouns, verbs, complement, conjunctions, grammar structure and so on in order to understand how the words work together to create a sentence.
MY LEARNING PROCESS IS RELATED TO THIS THEORY
because when I started to learn English as a second language, I used to imitate some expressions I heard in some games, I listened to in some songs, and I heard from my friends. In that moment, I wasn’t conscious of what I was saying at all but I felt well when I used these expressions because I was able to communicate or express any idea with my friends. After this, due to the high interest I had in the language, I had the opportunity to learn at an institute where my teachers used to tell me some examples using the grammar we were going to learn that day and some vocabulary in order to be able to create similar sentences.
These are the reasons why, I consider my learning process is related to this theory.
STEP 1B – AGE FOR LEARNING REFLECTION
The age is a matter that has a lot of relevance when learning. There are some advantages and disadvantages for the learner depending on his/her age and I’m going to say why.
- On the other hand, I consider that the age does not affect at all the learning process but It could affect the speed how a person can get the second language. Talking about me and my experience while learning English, from my point of view if a person has the possibility to learn a second language at an early has more advantages looking at the future than a person who learns the second language being an adult already. What I mean is that a kid or a teenager will be able to handle a language for more time than an adult and making reference to the time a person can have, kids and teens have more available time to learn than an adult and it is a significant fact in the learning process.
- First of all, I should say that both adults and children are immersed in the same stages to get a second language, so there are many similarities regarding pronunciation mistakes, lack of vocabulary, etc. The difference between adults and children makes reference to the age could be in the agility how adults can get the grammar and the agility how children can get and memorize the pronunciation. So, while understanding grammar is easier for adults, pronunciation is a lot easier for children. In addition, some researches have concluded that adults are superior to children in rate of acquisition, and older children learn faster than younger children. Krashen, Long, and Scarcella (1979).
Some examples that can illustrate my ideas are the following ones:
- Some parents enroll their children to learn English. In the beginning, some people could think that kids or teens go to play, to share time with their friends and that they’re not learning at all, but after a year of being around an English environment, kids start implementing what they learned in a very successful way and thinking about the future, they’ll have great advantages from kids who didn’t study the second language.
-Now, adults are aware of what they’re doing when they subscribe to learn English at an institute, for example. But due to the many responsibilities, lack of free time to practice, bills to pay, etcetera. The process could be a little bit harder than the process a kid has. Furthermore, adults tend to ask why words are here or there because they’re constantly looking of a logical reason which sentences are created, but children don’t.
In conclusion, learning processes could be similar talking about the stages children and adults pass by or go through, the age doesn’t affect at all, grammar understanding is an advantage for adults, and pronunciation seems to be an advantage for kids.
