wHAT IS PARTITIVE PROPORTION

If a given whole is to be divided into several parts given a specific ratio.

EXAMPLE

Three children decided to give their grandmother a gift for her 70th birthday. They decided to divide the expenses in the ratio 2:3:4. How much will each one pay if the cost of the gift is P900 only?

1. Add the ratio 2 + 3 + 4 = 9 2. Divide the sum by the given number. 900 divided by 9 = 100 3. Substitute the ratios to the quotient. 100 x 2= Php 200 100 x 3= Php 300 100 x 4= Php 400

EXAMPLE

Two numbers are in the ratio 2:5. If the sum of the two numbers is 56, what are the two numbers?

1. Add the ratio 2 + 5=7 2. Divide the sum by the given number. 56 divided by 7 = 8 3. Substitute the ratios to the quotient. 8 x 2= 16 8 x 5= 40
