Our Norman Rockwell tour takes you through the career of Norman Rockwell, from his early days as the Art Director of Boy's Life through his vast success at the Saturday Evening Post, to his later work with Look magazine.

EARLY YEARS

Norman Rockwell was an American painter and illustrator. He was born in New York City in 1894. He always wanted* to be an artist so when he was 14 years old, he started classes at the New York School of Art. He left* school when he was 16 years old to study art at the National Academy of Design and then at the Art Students League.

COMMERCIAL SUCCESS

Norman Rockwell started his career at the age of 18 when he produced paintings for ‘Boys’ Life magazine’.

Later, in 1916, Norman Rockwell started to work for the Saturday Evening Post.He published 321 covers for the magazine over 47 years.

Norman Rockwell liked to represent everyday scenes. He captured ordinary moments. Most of his illustrations were based on photos.

LATER CAREER AND FINAL YEARS

By the end of his career, Rockwell was interested in more serious subjects.

In 1964 he started doing covers for Look magazine. He denounced racism and discrimination.

He portrayed political leaders such as:

John F. KENNEDY

Richard NIXON

Rockwell was fascinated by space.

Rockwell died at his home in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, on November 8, 1978. He was 84.

A museum in Stockbridge is now devoted to his art.
