Definition of this axe

In this axe, several aspects can be evoked, like the question of frontiers. When different populations having their own identities exchange, a lack of cultural and/or linguistic understanding might lead to a cultural shock and even give rise to conflicts. Firstly, we can think about the borders between countries, for example the migrants that are sometimes pigeon-holed and rejected. We can also think about invisible borders within societies : for example gaps between rich and poor, old and young, men and women. Going beyond frontiers, through travel, mediation or dialogue, is a way of exchanging by learning new languages, broadening our horizons by discovering new cultures, working for solidarity and hospitality, … Thus we can understand that diversity is a wonderful source of enrichment rather than a source of division.

Questions raised by this axe

How has globalisation affected social, cultural and economic life in different areas ?

How has increased social and physical mobility enhanced our interaction with others, the integration and exchange of cultures, the inclusion of minorities, … ?

How have such developments affected different types of borders (physical, political, cultural, linguistic) ? How have different societies reacted to this ?

What are the borders which exist within a society, in between different groups (different generations, social, groups, different areas, …) ?

Tribes

Native Americans

Link with the axe :

Native Americans and Pilgrims had each of them their own identity, language, story, and culture, when they met. Their exchange allowed an essential enrichment for both. But this exchange didn't have a perfect end : misunderstandings between these populations completely different gave rise to conflicts and led the settlers to feel superior. Thus, native Americans have been exterminated or captured as slaves.

Today

Link with the axe :

When the Windrush generation immigrated in Great Britain, they had their own identity. Misunderstandings created invisible borders between the immigrants, that were pigeon-holed, and the native British, that didn't welcome them. Today, some people want to promote exchange and solidarity with the Windrush generation and their descendants that belong in Great Britain, in order to work for their integration while keeping traditions alive. Indeed it is better off to see these people as a cultural diversity benefit.

Diversity and inclusion

Art can be part of the identity of a country or a group of persons. We can think about traditional music and dance, for example...

Each territory has its own identity, culture, language, traditions, ... and the identity of territories has been shaped by their stories...

To make diversity happen, we need differences of identity between groups and people, in terms of age, gender, ethnicity, religion, ...
