SPELLING ING RULES

The -ing spelling rules are:

  • Most verbs add "-ing".
For example: "read+ ing = reading". wash + ing= washing.
  • when a verb ends in "e", drop the "e" and add "-ing".
For example: "take + ing = taking". write + ing = writing

The -ing spelling rules are:

  • when a one-syllable verb ends in vowel + consonant, double the final consonant and add "-ing".
For example: "hit + ing = hitting".
  • when a verb ends in "Y", add "-ing".
For example: "study + ing = studying".play + ing = playing.
