Inside a PARTY, party MEMBERS choose a CANDIDATE to represent them in the GENERAL ELECTION.
In AUGUST, the PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE of each party is SELECTED. He / she chooses a RUNNING MATE.
In DECEMBER, the ELECTORAL COLLEGE (538 people) votes for a candidate. The candidate with 270 (or more) votes becomes the PRESIDENT ELECT.
