How does Natalie Portman illustrate the concept of Brain Drain ?

Brain Drain is the concept of highly skilled or educated people moving from one country to an other in search of opportunities.

I. Background

Neta-Lee Hershlag was born on June 9th 1981 in Jerusalem, Israel.

Natalie's family is from Europe. A part of it was persecuted during the Holocaust.

After 1945, they left Europe and moved to Israel.

Natalie's father is an Israeli gynecologist.

Natalie's mother is American. She's a housewife.

When she was 3, her parents moved to the USA.

Natalie went to the Jewish Solomon Schechter School. There she learnt to speak languages but she also learnt ballet .

She once said "I was an ambitious and very serious child".

II. Her career as an actress

In 1994, she played Mathilda in the movie Léon : The Professional. She changed her name and became Natalie Portman. Her perfomance in The Professional is applauded by crtics.

Then she appeared in a few other films.

At the end of the 90s, she interpreted Anne Frank in Broadway. The role reminded her family's past in Europe.

In 1999, in Star Wars Episode I : The Phantom Menace, she played Padme Amidala. The movie allowed her to known internationally. She appeared in the two other Episodes of Star Wars.

From 1999 to 2003, she studied psychology at Harvard.

In 2010 she appeared in Black Swan. Her performance is considered as one of the best of the decade. She won several awards like a Golden Globes and an Oscar.

Portman has produced movies like "Jane got a gun".

In 2016 she portrayed Jackie Kennedy. The film was a sucess.

III. Activism

When she read the book "Eating Animals", she became a Vegan.

She produced a documentary about battery farming in the U.S.

She's a member of the "One Voice Movement". The movement wants peace between Israel and Palestine.

In 2002, she wrote a letter to the Harvard Crimson where she criticized an article written by a student.

She is the ambassador of FINCA, an organization that supports women who own compagnies in developing countries.

She gave a few speeches about this in some universities in order to sensibilize people.

Natalie Portman has always supported the Democratic Party.

In 2008, she supported Barack Obama during his campaign.

Portman is a feminist.

TIME'S UP is a movement against sexual harrasment. She donated $50,000 to it.

She gave a speech at the Women's March where she denouced the sexualization that she suffered when she was younger.

Portman has an Instagram account where she talks about causes she supports. She has a huge community from everywhere around the world.

When Natalie's parents moved to the U.S.A, they didn't know that their daughter will become one of the most sucessful women of her generation.

Natalie Portman has fulfilled the American Dream by being an actress, but also an outstanding activist.
