Most jurisdictions differentiate degrees of severity in crime. This virtual game is an exercise in applying the elements of crime, with degrees of severity, in case examples involving both personal and property crimes. By the end of this virtual activity, you should have a strong understanding about applying the elements of crime, with criminal statutes that differentiate severity of three types of crime: murder, robbery, and burglary.

A.R.S. § 13-1105 - Murder

1st Degree

Cliff Notes

Class 1 Felony

Felon Murder Rule

Requires no specific mental state other than what is required for the commission of any of the enumerated felonies.

2nd Degree

Requires no premeditation and can include reckless behaviors that results in death.

These four types of reports all share some common characteristics, but they also have special requirements. Understanding these four types and challenges will build your confidence and help you write more effective reports.

  • Physical description including color of eyes and hair, height and weight
  • Time and date of arrest
  • Time and date of booking
  • Location of the arrest
  • The factual circumstances surrounding the arrest
