Holi Festival

By: Carolina Urrego

India is one of the largest countries in the world; it is recognized by its exotic culture and diversity, which makes it a country with wonderful festivals. I am going to tell you about a celebration called Holi. This festival is known by all the people around the world. Probably, you may have heard of it, as the festival of colors. In this text, I am going to explain some interesting facts about this traditional festival, in order to inform all travelers who want to visit this beautiful country.

Holi is a festival that takes place in March. It is celebrated at the beginning of spring with songs, dances and powders of different colors that reach the sky. It is a party that encourages love, equality, freedom and happiness. In fact, it is one of the few moments in which all the people of the country participate regardless of economic position or any social difference.

Moreover, the meaning of this holiday is deeper than you might imagine because it is marked by some religious traditions, such as the triumph of good over evil. For instance, this is explained in the legend of Prince Prahlada who was saved by Vishnu (a god of the Indian culture) when his aunt tried to kill him. This festival celebrates a new beginning and the opportunity to leave the past behind.

Powders of different colors take an important role in this celebration. Each color is used to represent spring time; for example, red means fertility and love; blue means the skin color of the god Krishna, and green and yellow are for nature and flowers.

In the past, powders were generally made from natural plants, such as turmeric, cardamom, and other spices, but now, as this tradition has become too popular, people use chemicals to reproduce these bright springtime colors. However, these have brought harmful consequences for health. Thus, some organizations promote the use of natural products.

This tradition is celebrated in several countries, such as Nepal, Spain and the United States where there are a lot of Hindu people. I hope this description has helped you to know more about this great festival. It is certainly a beautiful festival and I would like to see it one day.
