EXPLORING THE GEOGRAPHY & CULTURE

mapping the big picture

What role has geography played in the development of cultures?

why do we need maps?

information literacy

What does the term Information Literacy mean to you? What are some possible sources? In your JOURNAL, brainstorm a list of ideas describing the importance of maps. Where have you used a map? How is a map helpful on a vacation? What jobs require maps? Why do we map outerspace? How is an architectural drawing of a house or even the insides of a computer like a map?

In order to do a thorough study of any area, you must have a starting point for understanding. Maps can serve this purpose and be very helpful in many ways.

Rivers

The Middle East is one of the major regions of the world. Its geography has impacted patterns of population throughout history. In many ways, ancient civilizations owed their lives to the river. The river provided the people with:  fertile soil  water for irrigation  a means of transportation

The Nile, Tigris, and Euphrates Rivers played significant roles in the development of civilizations and continue to effect population distribution in the Middle East.

region on 3 continents

Europe - asia - africa

The Middle East is unusual because this region really has countries in three different continents. Some of the Middle East is in Asia, some of it is in Africa, and some of it is in Europe. Some Middle Eastern countries are Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Iran. There are many other countries in this region, too. Several great seas line the coasts of the Middle East. Most Middle Eastern countries have a coast on at least one of the four main bodies of water in the region. However, Afghanistan is landlocked.

EGYPT

Mesopotamia

"Land Between the Rivers"

One of the world's first civilizations developed around 4500 B.C. between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. They are located in what is nodern day Iraq and they join and empty into the northern end of the Persian Gulf. The "land between the rivers" was rich and fertile. It was an ideal spot for many ancient civilizations to establish themselves and flourish.

EGYPT

the nile river

source of life to the egyptians

The Nile River starts at Lake Victoria high in the mountains of Uganda and flows north to the Mediterranean Sea It's over 4,000 miles long and its banks are fertile land for growing crops. Why do you think so many people live near the Nile River?

Now you will STOP this lesson. Return to your map handout and label your map of the Middle East following the mapping rules you received at the beginning of the year. Turn in the map when completed.
