" Individuals become stronger assets when they are able to learn, solve problems, and make changes on their own by finding answers and gaining hands-on experience. "

Conrad Gottfredson, Bob Mosher

This kind of active learning requires learners to have instant access to up-to-date, useful, and accurate information and solutions; also it requires organizations to address the different moments of the active learning journey.

Have you ever heard about the Five Moments of Learning Need?

The Five Moments of Learning Need is a practical and useful approach that can be used to fill in the ‘learning’ gaps. Instead of focusing only on what the organization wants in terms of learning, it focuses on the specific needs of learners as they go about their work and addresses those needs by providing the requisite training. It is this very shift in perspective that makes it such an insightful and pragmatic model for delivering training.

Let's have a look at them:

Using knowledge to solve a problem in a situation when something didn’t work out as expected.

Learning a new way of doing something. This requires giving up practices that are comfortable for practices that are new and unknown.

Acting upon what has been learned. This can include planning, remembering, or adapting.

Expanding on what has been learned.

Learning something for the first time.

How does technology help learners be productive in these learning moments?

In the following slide you will see three practical examples of how learning is happening through technology. Can you name which "moment of learning need" is supported by technology? Is it about using technology to learn something new? or is it about applying knowlegde? or is it about solving a problem?

Learning is … Receiveing a “seed for inspiration” before a learning activity through Whatsapp or email.

Learning is … Beeing reminded of the key elements of a training session in a“refresher” message.

Learning is … Reviewing a videocast identifying a specific topic, providing examples and calling for action.
