Differences between social democracy and political democracy.

What does authentic democracy mean to you?

If one believes in democracy, can they be inconsistent with that principle in certain practices at home or at school?

Democracy is a political form of government and also a way of life and coexistence, where the principles and values that shape it are applied.

As a social experience, democratic coexistence includes human interaction based on respect for the dignity and equality of all individuals, accepting their differences (based on ideology, religious beliefs, culture, ethnic group, political affiliation, physical appearance, gender), and the full exercise of freedom for all individuals to be who they are and express themselves as they are.

According to the Italian political scientist Norberto Bobbio (1984), human rights play an important role in democracy because they reveal a moral progress of humanity and the path towards peace and freedom. Rights emerge as a response to forms of oppression and dehumanization.

In this way, democracy, which historically has occupied a purely political space, becomes part of civil society in different areas where the population develops: school, family, community, factory, etc.

Democratic coexistence is the transition from political democracy to social democracy, thereby democratizing society. The German philosopher Jürgen Habermas (1929) emphasizes the importance of dialogue as a mechanism to democratize society.

Civil society is a space where citizens interact, build power relations, and create non-institutionalized communication processes that make individuals active agents in decision-making. How can democracy be strengthened in this complex coexistence? One of the mechanisms is conflict mediation, a tool based on dialogue between disagreeing parties to find possible, consensual, and well-founded solutions, with the commitment of each party to abide by them.

For democracy to function, individuals must be aware of their rights, exercise them, demand their fulfillment, and respect the rights of others. This logic breaks with adult-centric, imposing, vertical, violent, exclusionary, or discriminatory perspectives.

Making democracy a social experience means living equality in all its forms, recognizing social diversity, practicing solidarity and mutual assistance, working towards wealth redistribution, encouraging citizen participation in political life, and respecting nature. These are basic conditions to achieve maximum personal and collective well-being, which is the concept of Buen Vivir (Good Living).

Summarizing...

Democracy as a political form.

Democracy as a form of human coexistence.

Democratic coexistence is a line of thought whose principle lies in respecting individuals regardless of their race, creed, language, social status, level of education, culture, or ideology. Therefore, tolerance and the consideration of equality should prevail in democratic coexistence.

Democracy is a form of state organization in which collective decisions are adopted by the people through mechanisms of direct or indirect participation that confer legitimacy to their representatives.

How? h) Is it necessary to improve this instrument?
