What is an Adjective? ¿Qué es un Adjetivo?

Adjectives are words that describe or modify a noun, making your writing and speaking more specific, and a whole lot more interesting. Words like small, blue, and fast are descriptive, and they are all examples of adjectives.

Adjective Agreement

In Spanish, adjectives must agree with the noun or pronoun they describe in gender and in number.

This means that if the noun being described is feminine, the adjective must be feminine. If the noun is masculine the adjective must be masculine. If the noun is singular the adjective is singular. If the noun is plural, the adjective will also be plural. Put all together, in Spanish all components of the sentence must match exactly in gender and number.

More Descriptive Adjectives to Describe Objects

Now, let’s look at the rules of adjectives in Spanish"

In this lesson, we will talk about descriptive adjectives. Descriptive adjectives describe some quality of a noun.

Spanish adjectives are listed in their masculine singular form in dictionaries, so it is important to know how to match these masculine singular adjectives to whatever noun you happen to be describing.

Most adjectives end in -o, -e, or -consonant in their base form. Their base form is singular and masculine. Let’s look at the rules for matching these adjectives to their respective nouns in gender and number.

Rules of Adjectives Basically, there are two types of adjectives. Type 1: Four-form adjectives. Type 2: Two-form adjectives.

Type 1

Type 2

Type 2

These adjectives agree in gender and number to match the noun.

These adectives do not change in gender. They agree with both masculine and feminine nouns in the singular form. They do change in number.

These adjectives do not change in gender, but they do change in number just like adjectives that end in -e.

Adjectives that end in e in their base form are two-form adjectives.

Adjectives that end in o in their base form are four-form adjectives.

Adjectives that end in a consonant in their base form are also two-form.

Rules for Making Adjectives Plural in Spanish

Unlike in English, adjectives in Spanish change in gender and number. To make adjectives plural in Spanish, follow the same rules as to make nouns plural. Except that there are only two basic rules to form the plural of adjectives in Spanish: 1. Add –s to singular adjectives ending in a vowel. Ejemplo: rojo - rojos verde - verdes. 2. Add –es to singular adjectives ending in a consonant. Ejemplo: azul – azules gris – grises

Descriptive Adjectives are used with the verb “to be” Los Adjectivos Descriptivos se usan con el verbo “SER” Let’s learn the conjugations of the verb TO BE in Spanish "

But first …

What is Conjugating in Spanish?

Conjugation is very important in Spanish because when we put a verb with a subject in a sentence, we need to change its form to match the subject of the sentence. In both English and Spanish, the purpose of conjugation is to indicate the number of the subject (singular or plural), the tense (such as present, past or future), and mood (such as indicative, subjunctive or imperative). We conjugate verbs in English, too, but it's a lot simpler than in Spanish. When we add an -s to the third person singular form in the present tense, that is conjugation. When conjugating a regular verb in Spanish, we remove the ar/er/ir ending part of the verb and replace it with an ending to match the subject. The verb to be – SER – in Spanish, is an irregular verb. So you need to memorize its conjugations since there is not specific conjugating pattern to follow when conjugating irregular verbs.

The Verb SER - TO BE is used with Adjetives to Describe
Subject + Verb Agreement with Nouns

When it comes to conjugating, subject + verb agreement, in Spanish we do not have the pronoun it. Simply use the noun itself. For instance, the car, would be replace with the pronoun it in English In Spanish, el libro would still be el libro, there is not it to replace it. TO BE conjugations used in this lesson: For singular nouns, it is, use es. The book is, el libro es. For plural nouns, they books are, los libros son. So use es for singular nouns son for plural nouns

los libros son
el libro es
