The SEMIOTIC TRIANGLE
DEFINITION
The semiotic triangle is used to study meaning, which is the process by which any object is transformed into a sign.
Symbol−Thought−REFERENT
1.- The symbol represents the word itself.
2.- The reference: It's the idea that comes to mind when we say a word.
3.- The referent: It's the physical object that represents the signified and signifier.
EXAMPLE
Reference:
Symbol: Parrot
Referent: A parrot
THE RESEARCHES
The semiotic triangle is a model of how linguistic symbols relate to the objects they represent. The triangle was published in The Meaning of Meaning (1923) by Charles Ogden and Ivor Richards.
