Superlatives

A superlative adjective expresses the extreme or highest degree of a quality. We use a superlative adjective to describe the extreme quality of one thing in a group of things.

SUBJECT + VERB+ THE+ ADJ SUP + OF ALL/ IN THE GROUP

Susan is THE tallEST in the group.Cheetah is THE fastEST of all the animals in the jungle

Spelling rules

Short adjectives

• They add -EST at the end. tall- the tallest

• Adjectives ending in E just add ST: nice- the nicest

• If the adjective has a CVC pattern, double the last consonant and add -EST: big- the biggest

• Change the Y to I and add -EST: heavy- the heaviest

Long adjectives

They add THE MOST before the adjective (they do not add -EST)For example: beautiful- THE MOST beautiful

IRREGULAR ADJECTIVES

They CHANGE:good= THE BEST bad= THE WORST far: THE FARTHEST/ THE FURTHEST
