Introduction

The clip below describes the main features of the IRML:

This lesson plan has been co-developed between the Interactive Research Methods Lab's team, and Dr. Darlene Rodriguez- Schaefer (Associate Professor of Social Work and Human Services). The aim of the lesson plan is to help undergraduate students to collaboratively reach a deep understanding of the key elements that should be included in solid and methodologically-sound research designs. HS 4900 is an undergraduate course referred as the culmination of the Human Services major, and thus integrates students' education and experiences. It provides students with the opportunity to synthesize and apply learning from their program of study in a comprehensive manner.

This lesson plan will help undergraduate students taking HS4900 reach a deep understanding of the key elements that should be included in solid and methodologically-sound research designs. This unit will guide students through the nine steps proposed by the Hopscotch Model to develop research designs in human sciences and education. The identification of the nine steps will serve as the basis for students to propose their own research designs for their senior human services capstone projects (client- or agency-based projects).

1. This activity will help undergraduate students develop their research skills. These include logic, and problem-solving skills (Bauer & Bennett, 2003) and experimental skills like design, data collection, data analysis, understanding of limitations, and research ethics (John & Creighton, 2012; Russell, Hancock, & McCullough, 2007). Students also learn how to seek out and consume the relevant literature and learn the disciplinary language (Bauer & Bennett, 2003). 2. It will also help students develop their communication and critical thinking skills. Students improve their oral, written, and visual communication skills (Bauer & Bennett, 2003). 3. Finally, the proposed activity will help students taking HS 4900 develop a methodologically-sound research design for their senior capstone projects.

Step 0: Prior to the face-to-face session in the IRML, the instructor of the course will describe the activity and the Lab to students taking HS 4900. Step 1: The instructor will present the activity to be conducted in the IRML, as well as its relationship with the previous activities conducted in the course. (10') Step 2: Brief introduction to the Interactive Research Methods Lab and the Hopscotch Model. (10') Step 3: Hands-on session. In pairs, students will interact with the augmented reality contents included in each of the nine steps conforming the Lab. In this stage, students will have to individually fill out the second column of the table shown in Appendix A (also check example provided in Appendix B), by describing in their own words the key elements that need to be considered to generate a solid research design for their own study. (50’ ) Step 4: Each student will present in front of the class (5’) the resultant of the previous step with the aim of discussing it. (35’ )
