Introduction

This lesson plan has been co-developed between the Interactive Research Methods Lab's team, and Dr. Chinasa Elue (Associate Professor of Educational Leadership and Higher Education). This lesson plan will help students taking EDL 9330 to: a) get a better idea of the key elements conforming a methodologically-sound research design, and; b) understand and experience the reviewing the literature in the area of comparative education to frame the proposed comparative study, analyze research and policies, and find the gaps in research. EDL 9330 is a doctoral seminar that provides doctoral candidates with an overview of frameworks, major concepts, and current trends in comparative education. It examines how different countries address issues common to all education systems and enables candidates to read, discuss, analyze, and interpret relevant studies and scholarship in this area. Special attention is devoted to similarities and differences in educational policy and practice related primarily to elementary and secondary levels of education in different countries.

As a result of the systematic searching and synthesis for relevant literature, students will be able to formulate better research questions, and build a conceptual framework for their comparative studies. The reading and analysis of policy reports and research in the field of comparative education will also support the course’s learning objectives.
