Introduction

The clip below describes the main features of the IRML:

This lesson plan has been co-developed between the Interactive Research Methods Lab's team, and Drs. Jillian Ford (Associate Professor of Social Studies Education), Lateefah Id-Deen (Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education), and Natasha Thornton (Assistant Professor of Reading and Literacy Education). The aim of this lesson plan is to help undergraduate students undergraduate students to reach a deep understanding of the key elements that should be included in solid research designs

This lesson plan will help undergraduate students reach a deep understanding of the key elements that should be included in solid research designs. This unit will help students identify the nine steps proposed by Hopscotch to develop well-informed research designs, in a published study read prior to the session. The identification of the nine steps in an article used in the proposed example will serve as the basis for students to discuss and reflect upon the key elements of their own research design.

1. The activity proposed in this lesson plan will help undergraduate students develop their research skills. These include logic, and problem-solving skills (Bauer & Bennett, 2003) and experimental skills like design, data collection, data analysis, understanding of limitations, and research ethics (John & Creighton, 2012; Russell, Hancock, & McCullough, 2007). Students also learn how to seek out and consume the relevant literature and learn the disciplinary language (Bauer & Bennett, 2003). 2. It will also help students develop their communication skills, includig the improvement of oral, written, and visual communication skills (Bauer & Bennett, 2003). 3. Finally, the proposed activity will promote students’ critical thinking.

Step 0: Prior to the face-to-face session in the IRML, students will be asked to read the following article:Kinloch, V., Burkhard, T., & Penn, C. (2017). When school is not enough: Understanding the lives and literacies of Black youth. Research in the Teaching of English, 52(1), 34. Step 1: In pairs, students will interact with the multimedia contents present in either the physical space of the lab, or the 360 Virtual Tour of the Interactive Research Methods Lab (see: https://irml.kennesaw.edu) In this stage, students will have to fill out the third column of the table shown in Appendix A, by describing in their own words the key elements that need to be considered to generate a solid research design for their research topic. To do so, students will be able to check the second column, in which the research design used in the previously read article has been unpacked (Kinloch, Burkhard, & Penn, 2017) (60’ ) Step 2: Each pair will present in front of the class (5’) the resultant of the previous step with the aim of discussing it. (30’ ) Step 3: Students interested in generating their own research designs will individually build their own IRML dodecahedron (see appendix B) so they can bring it home and interact with the proposed steps (30’ )
