Descriptive Paragraph
A well-written descriptive paragraph pulls in all five senses to engage the reader.
Descriptive Paragraph
- Describes how something or someone looks or feels.
- Includes how the writer feels
- "Shows" the reader than "tell"
- Creates a sensory image on the reader's mind
We divide the Descriptive Paragraph into 3 parts:
Description of a place
Description of a person
Description of a thing or experience
Characteristics of a Descriptive Paragraph:
Descriptive paragraphs let the reader touch, taste, see, hear, and smell what you are describing. The reader should feel as if they can see what you are decribing clearly. You want to paint a picture as you write a decriptive paragraph. Here are few guidelines to help you write a great descriptive paragraph.
- Describe particular smells and tastes in the paragraph. Use the most descriptive words possible to allow the reader to smell or taste what you are describing.
- Add the senses of touch and hearing to your paragraph wherever possible. Describe certain textures and sounds.
- Use "like and as" when you write your descriptive paragraph. These devices strengthen your paragraph if used properly.
- Insert descriptive adjectives to modify your nouns. Don't just say "ocean" . Describe the actual colors you see in the ocean. Use more descriptive words such as "deep dark blue ocean".
