In Class: Bellringers

(control the slideshow here)

In Class: INBs

  • We create our own textbook! Everything we learn will be recorded in our Interactive Notebooks (INBs).
  • Research shows that the more active your note-taking, the more effective it is. So we'll cut, fold, tape, highlight, etc. with colored papers.
  • Students get to take it with them to use it as a great resource for high school math.

Every day is different! We'll do a variety of activities like:

In Class: Activities

  • technology (Desmos, Nearpod, Classkick, GimKit, Quizizz, etc.)
  • scavenger hunts
  • question stacks
  • “magic” tricks
  • fun lessons
  • group activities

like this one using similar figures to calculate the height of the lightpole

like this one on Mulletude (which is the ratio of the business in the front to the party in the back)

Our assessments are in the form of a Concept Check (CC). The CC is separated into individual concepts. Students receive an individual grade on each concept on a scale 1-5. This process fosters GROWTH, because lower scores are always replaced by higher scores. Students continue to work until they reach mastery.

Assessments

Assessments

Soon, your student will be (electronically) sharing his/her Mastery Tracker with you. This is an online spreadsheet that students will update each week with their new Concept grades. The Tracker is basically a bar graph that shows your student's progress -- which concepts they’ve mastered, and which ones they haven’t mastered YET.

  • Students receive the sheet in advance and can work ahead.
  • There are only 6 problems each night.
  • The problems spiral back to previously learned concepts, as well as covering current unit concepts. What we learn this week won't show up until next week’s hw.
  • They submit their answers online so I see important trends and so I can seek out individuals who may need extra help.

Homework: Spiral ws

Floop is a web tool where students upload a picture of their work. I then give them detailed personalized feedback.

Homework: Flipping

The "flipped" classroom

  • Students fill out their guided notes in their INB at home while they watch a video I've made. They can go at their own pace and pause and rewind if they need to.
  • There are embedded questions they answer that keep them engaged and provide immediate feedback.
  • This frees up valuable class time for us to practice the skills together!
  • Math Minute: I send out a short email update to parents each Monday.
  • POW: The Problem of the Week is a challenge I encourage families to tackle together!

Parent Involvement

  • Homework: Please don’t help too much with homework. (I need to know if your child is struggling.)
  • Communicate: If you see signs of math anxiety at home, please let me know!
  • Website: I have recorded videos for every single concept in our course, and have stored them on my website. Along with each video is a link to the INB guided notes.

Extra Help

  • CC corrections: Each week, students will watch a video I've made for any problem they missed on their CC. This will help them learn from their mistakes.
  • Individual help: I’m available before school and after school on specific days (listed in the syllabus.)
