GERUND

• GERUND IS THE NAME WE USE FOR ING FORM
• We add -ING to verbs due to some reasons.... do you know when?
• let's check!!

EXAMPLE 1

1- SPEAKING IN ENGLISH IS EASY

SPEAKING HAS -ING FORM.... WHY?

-BECAUSE it is in FRONT POSITION, THAT IS, it is the subject of the sentence. -If a sentence starts with a verb, it must be written with ING form!! It is the SUBJECT. - As you know, the subject is OBLIGATORY!!!

2. I AM WRITING A BOOK

WHY ARE WE USING ING IN WRITING?

SURE!! IT IS CONTINUOUS TENSE!!-ALL VERBS IN A CONTINUOUS TENSE USE THE ING FORM OF THE MAIN VERB: (EX. PAST COTINUOUS: WAS WRITING...)

3. PETER IS VERY GOOD AT READING THEY ARE INTERESTED IN CHATTING

WHY ARE WE USING ING IN THESE TWO EXAMPLES? READING AND CHATTING???

• FOCUS ON THE WORDS BEFORE THE VERB.... WHAT ARE THEY?
• SURE! THEY ARE PREPOSITIONS!!
• AFTER PREPOSITIONS, WE ADD ING TO VERBS!!

4. I LOVE READING BOOKS SHE HATES WATCHING TV

WHY DO WE USE ING IN THE WORDS READING AND WATCHING??

• what kind of word appears before the ing forms?
• SURE! They are verbs!!
• WHat do they have in common? They express "liking": love, hate, like, enjoy, dislike... are followed by ING FORM.
• There are more verbs followed by ing: don't mind, fancy, feel like, avoid, consider....
