What are Personal Pronouns?

A personal pronoun is a short word we use to substitute the proper name of PEOPLE, PLACES or THINGS. Personal pronouns provide us with the following information: 1. The person: Who is speaking? 2. The number: Is the pronoun plural or singular? 3. The gender: Is the pronoun feminine, masculine, or neuter?

Types of Personal Pronouns

1. Subject Pronouns

Subject Pronouns

A subject pronoun is used as the SUBJECT of a sentence in place of a PEOPLE, PLACES, or THINGS particularly after the subject has already been introduced.- Karen is one my classmates. She is a great person.- I have a lot of cousins. They all love spending Christmas together.

a. I am from Bucaramanga, Santander. b. You are the best friend, ever! c. He is taking a nap right now. d. She went glamping last November. e. It isn't a brand new laptop. f. We have never eaten Thai food. g. You like peaches and tangerines . h . They are such great neighbors.

Object Pronouns

An object pronoun is used: 1. as the objects of verbs: - Please call me back after 5:00 p.m. 2. as the objects of prepositions. - Our trip to Panama City depends on him.

a. My science teacher helps me a lot. b. I have always loved you! c. Hanging out with him will be fun. d. Katy is my friend, I know her well. e. Luis has a new helmet, he got it yesterday. f. Sorry about it and please excuse us. g. Martha is still waiting for you. h . Actually, I bought them on Friday.

Possessive Adjectives

Possessive adjectives are followed immediately by a noun (PERSON, PLACE, or THING). - My hometown is close to a huge amusement park. - Her daughter-in-law is majoring in computer science.

a. My favorite fruits are mangoes and peaches. b. Your math exam grade was 4.6, congrats! c. His apartment is on th 5th floor. d. She is Sara. Her mom is my coworker. e. My dog's name is Milo. Its tail isn't long. f. This is our house, do you like our garden? g. Guys, are all your classes online? h . Their toys are all over the floor.

Possessive Pronouns

A possessive pronoun IS NOT followed immediately by a NOUN; they stand alone. - That black helmet on the table is his. - These are my candies. Yours are in the plastic bag.

a. Is this your umbrella? Mine is the black one. b. I completed my report. Please, finish yours ASAP. c. Our class is on Mondays, but his is on Thursdays. d. My house is quite big. Hers isn't that big, though. e. ----- -------- f. Your book is in Spanish, but ours is in Portuguese. g. Pedro is a great friend of yours, right? h . My kitten is just 3 months old, but theirs is 11.

Reflexive Pronouns

Reflexive Pronouns are used as the object of a verb or preposition when the subject of the sentence and the object are THE SAME PERSON. - She shouldn't blame herself, it wasn't her fault.- You must be proud of yourself because you did an amazing job!

a. I oftentimes laugh at myself. b. You cut yourself, be careful next time! c. He is glad working for himself. d. Diana does believe in herself. e. The wound healed itself quickly. f. We introduced ourselves at the meeting. g. You all, help yourselves, please! h . My siblings take care of themselves.
