Accelerated action and transformative pathways: realizing the decade of action and delivery for sustainable development

The High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) is the yearly conference of the United Nation where governments, UN Agencies and civil society come together to discuss the achievements that have been made towards Agenda 2030.

Commitments to the SDGs Sustainable development forms one of IAU’s key strategic priorities since 2016. IAU has worked on sustainable development and developped the following policy statements:

  • IAU Iquitos Statement on Education for Sustainable Development adopted in 2016 at the General Conference - IAU Members commit to build synergies and promote collaboration in favour of sustainable development.
  • IAU Kyoto Declaration on Sustainable Development adopted in 1993 - IAU Members urge all universities worldwide to undertake research and action to achieve sustainable development.

The IAU co-organized this workshop with:- United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) / Education for Justice initiative - UN Department of Economics and Social Affairs ( UNDESA) - World Economic Forum - The Partnering Initiative

IAU Secretary General, Dr Hilligje van’t Land, was part of the panel and shared her experience on multi-stakeholder partnerships with higher education.

IAU co-organized this workshop and IAU Secretary General Dr. Hilligje Van't Land coordinated the discussion and presented IAU's work in partnership with the University of Tsukuba and the University of the West Indies.

HESI Special Event: Where Next ? Redesigning Further Education for the Future

In this era of uncertainty the question for this year’s Higher Education Sustainability Initiative Annual Conference at the High-level Political Forum is how we can redesign higher education in support of sustainable development, a green recovery, and regenerative pathways for education. The event provided insight on how Covid-19 will affect the sector of Higher Education and what new ideas are being considered that can enable radical change and regeneration.

IAU is part of HESI and IAU Secretary General Dr. Hilligje Van't Land moderated the main panel discussion with representatives from Academia and UN bodies.

Sustainable development faces a triple threat from COVID-19, Climate change and inequalities. Education - from cradle to grave, including Higher Education- is the solution.

International Green Gown Awards Virtual Ceremony

Recognising exceptional sustainability initiatives being undertaken by the world's universities and colleges, the International Green Gown Awards set the bar and put every learning institution at the heart of delivering the UN Global Goals.

IAU sat on the judging panel, and IAU Secretary General, Dr Hilligje van't Land presented the winner for " Sustainability Institution of the year" at the virtual ceremony.

This HESI Roundtable build on the discussions of the HESI Annual Event at the HLPF reflecting on how the Higher Education can come together to redesign the future of further and higher education.
