My 3-year journey through English class

People tell me I smile a lot, and overall I am a positive, happy, lovable weirdo (believe me) who likes to stand out from a crowd.

Some things about me:

This is me

People tell me I smile a lot, and overall I am a positive, happy, lovable weirdo who likes to stand out from a crowd.

clearly

I am a Dutch girl who moved to Portugal when she was 5 years old. I chose the Science course because I love Math and Biology BUT my heart lies with Art, any form possible.

I am also an attention junky and have frequent panic and anxiety attacks. Funnily enough, the only time I feel completely anxiety-free is on stage, because I can just turn my brain off. which is why it goes beyond loving it...I need it.

The Burned Cathedral

11th grade

I decided to start with the sore spot since my teacher did INDEED TEACH ME HOW TO WRITE TEXTS. It is without a doubt my weakest skill, although I do enjoy it, and after reading and revisiting my texts over the years, I have noticed that I did improve. English is the language in which I most enjoy writing because it just flows more naturally in my head.

I really loved this technique: writing a story from a sound track

I loved to write this text!! After two years of creating spooky stories, in this one I explored a different kind of fear, and I was really proud of it.

Debates

The refugee patriarch

This was definitely my worst debate. I played a Mexican man who was being deported from America due to his illegal status, and we talked about multiculturalism . It was, however, fun to create this character together with other people (we played a complete Mexican family).

Debates are one of the activities I have become better at over the years, mainly because I didn't know how to defend my place, never finding the right time to speak. It's something I became better at, and something that has really proved itself useful in my day to day life.

During this debate I got a high fever that led to a two-week flu

English professor

Moderator

This was my favourite debate because I felt very comfortable with the topic. I loved how we won the debate without being (from my point of view) "right" just because we attached to one tiny word "The". I was however considered ïntimidating after this debate, which I found scary because that was exactly what I was trying to avoid in other debates.

Our first debate ever was about "Landing on the moon: reality or hoax?". The teacher askeed me to be the moderator and I accepted not knowing the pain in the a** it is. Double the research and trouble. I did learn a lot from it, because I had to interrupt people, which is something I am not particularly good at

Role Plays

English and its dialects

Buisc

This project was about the different English dialects and I did it with Ana and Inês and LOVED IT.As a real anglophile

This was one of my favourite activities from the beginning. It explored the things I most loved in this class: creativity and spontaneous English speech. Something I would have liked to have done was having only 5 minutes to prepare and just completely improvise, but I also understood that was too difficult for some classmates. It is something that really made me discover myself, but I'll talk more about that later on...

"Rubbish"

Definition: a person who is fond of or greatly admires England or Britain.

I loved to explore the accent and the typical British words, and even more I could use a British accent without sounding braggy

"Fries "

Or over the top. It was one of my favourite role plays.

"Bonnie "

Tribe debate

Multiculturalism

This was the best role play EVER. We had to choose two countries and talk about their customs and other stuff.

Our last role play, forever, I guess. I talked about the Uro people. It was also our first role play over the internet since we were in E@D. It really worked better than I thought it would

Helena and I chose Russia and Texas (because at the time those were the two accents I could do and teach her). And while improvising I suddenly started talking about goats and how drinking goat milk made you smarter. This then became a running gag across the entire 11th grade for the rest of the year. I don't remember ever laughing so hard while doing a project.

I made this genially and never got to use it

Expressive Reading

What follows is a compilation of some of my favourite expressive readings

I think I've already mentioned her, but anyways here she is (I'll talk more about her further on)

Expressive readings

Ok!!

Now let's talk about

It changed my life!!!

The first time I didn't really get it but luckily Helena showed us all what to do. This helped me develop so many skills like reading, public speaking, drama etc. It became my favourite activity and also became me and Helena's "thing", thus, bringing us closer than ever before. It was also an activity I had never done before. It is perhaps the activity I'll miss the most.

The 1st one

As I said before my first expressive reading wasn't the best because I hadn't really master the concept yet. It was also the only one where I didn't get a 20. I chose a passage from one of my favourite books:

The picture of Dorian Grey

Funniest

Chocolate

Most complicated

Paper People

I read this one in the teacher's lounge and it was so much fun. Through this one, I discovered comedy is more my thing!!!

let me tell you... this...was a real verbal challenge!!!It was another one of my teacher's lounge choices and it was really fun to do.

Most memorable

(And favourite to perform)

Madness

Angry black woman

For some reason I´ve always remebered this poem. I loved it but found it wrong and odd for me to read it being white so I made my own adaptation about teenaged girls.

For this expressive reading I gave writing a go, which made the expressive part a lot easier. It was mine, entirely!

For my mom

Last (live) one

Educating Rita

To this day

This one was special for a whole other reason. It's a monologue from my mom's favourite movie, which she´s always dreamed to watch with her daughter. Also, I love the accent.

This one wasn't that special, but I still liked it. I'll always remember it as the last time I did an expressive reading live in front of my classmates.

Duo

My favourite poem

Rape joke

Special of course because it was Helena's and mine first duo. It was surprisingly easy, but then again we just have great creative chemistry. We did it after the other readings and no one really cared...but it was special to us

The road not taken

This is my favourite poem ever. It has helped me in moments of crisis and has often served me comfort. Once upon a time I promised my teacher I would read it before the end of the year. Kept my promise with a recording.

As I said, expressive readings helped me acquire different skills which later led to this:

1st place

Local reading contest

3rd place

Thanks to English classes, I discovered this passion of mine. If it weren't for expressive readings, none of this would have happened and I wouldn't have had the best experience of my life with some of the best people I have ever met.

Boring

Working with others

A boring presentation about the aboriginal people from Australia, because my colleagues thought my ideas were "over the top". And I still ended up doing it their way by myself.

Something English classes TRIED to teach me was working with people I wasn't comfortable with or used to, which for me can be quite difficult. The thing you should know about me is that when it comes to school I can be kind of a control freak and perfectionist. I don't want things necessarily my way, I want them done the best way (which often just ends up being my way because other people don't care as much as I do). This is still something I have to work on.

My first mental breakdown

This project caused me a mental breakdown because besides having to have done it all by myself, I lost it in the web and had to pull an all nighter plus spend 40 € to do it again. The idea behind the project was fun, though!!!

And yes I know how that sounds, but it's just true...

Other individual work

Because of what I said before, I have always liked to work on my own and sometimes that is just easier.

What follows is the compilation of some of my favourite individual assignments

Valentine's Day

This was a quick and easy one-lesson project that I very much enjoyed. It's what love means to me (in a nutshell)

Another project I really enjoyed. I actually knew nothing about pop art before this project which made it all the more fun for me. Plus something funny happened, the teacher had made a mistake in the script, but without knowing it, I was doing what she actually wanted...Telepathy I guess...

Pop Art

For this project, we had to make a presentation about a classic movie. I tried sitting through Citizen Kane but after 30 minutes I was so bored I gave up and made it about one of my favourite movies. My presentation was a bit bigger than it was supposed to, but I wanted to do the movie justice.

Failures

Now, remember when I said I wasn't good at working with other people? That doesn't go for everyone...Remember this gal?

I met and connected with her thanks to this class, and I discovered the best creative partner I have ever had.

Funnily enough both my best and my worst projects were with her. For the better and for the worse, I guess.

Grammar

My second mental breakdown

Failure

This one wasn't even that bad. It was a project about grammar and verb tenses. It has some mistakes, but also an inside joke we mentioned earlier

It was my lowest grade in an English project ever

You know what.....I don't even want to talk about it. I'll just say this...this was the reason I started taking anti-anxiety medication

Home

Nothing better than doing a project you love, with someone who also loves it. I don't know exactly when I got known as the "Harry Potter girl" around school, but this project must have had something to do with it.

Top 3 favourite projects

And now for the fun part: My ultimate favourite projects over the last three years

Place

To avoid giving anoyone spoilers, we decided to show what a year in Hogwarts would be like, giving people the full experience.

We sorted classmates into their respective Hogwarts houses, we played Quidditch... It was so much fun.

An adventure through Hogwarts

nd

It was the most elaborated project I have ever done and required a lot of work. First

Fortune card

Place

stipulating the rules, making the template, remembering and selecting details from the book (which required reading it 3 times), and selecting quotes. I still think we should sell it!!

Bookworm

-TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD- THE BOARD GAME

This was my favourite project to create. In these 3 years I had been hoping to have the opportunity to read a book, and then finally we had. I loved the book and I am in love with the outcome of this love.

st

Basically all we were asked to do was to make something related to the celebration of the "European Day of Languages", so we did!! Now...the idea behind this was actually something that came to me in the shower (as most of my creative ideas do)

Place

And yes, this happens to me all the time. And that's why my mom always yells at me that I shower too long

Accent ramblings

I visioned this comical sketch where all you would have to do to sound like the queen of England (RP accent) was to take a sip of water and keep it in your mouth. We just went from there and started creating this for many accents. And then we made rounds of presentations in our school. Moments of fun for free!!!

This project!!! This project is the representation of what I want to do for the rest of my life. As there was no recording of it, I will just explain it to you...

Credits for the name go to my wonderful teacher

Bonus

Here you have some of our "Scripts"

This project wasn't that special, but I still loved it. We had to talk about an ad. And we chose this one because it stars an actor we both love. And we spend the rest of the year calling EVERYTHING "It's a Tide ad", and laughed so much.

But we ended up improvising and doing something different in each class

This is the scene from Friends which inspired us to create the last part of the sketch

This project made me realise that I don't want anything else for the rest of my life

Goodbye

If we had a free day or a school trip, my worst nightmare was when it landed on an "English" day because that meant I had to wait another week for the next lesson. This is also due to the amazing teacher, she inspired me, helped me, and she is just an amazing person overall. So much that I have sent in a request to the people in charge to keep her as my teacher in the 12th grade (which was accepted ). She gives her all to the class and to the students with extracurricular, new and exciting activities. And best of all she tests our limits and she is demanding (I mean it took me 3 years to get my WELL DESERVED 20).

Three years ago I came to this class and to this school insecure and shy, and I had just decided it was better for me to find a stable job related to science. Now I go, more confident and ambitious than ever, and have decided to follow my dreams. I can't begin to explain how special English class has been to me...It's the class where I could be myself and explore every single corner of my creativity. A class is clearly special when you actually get disappointed when it gets cancelled.

Home

The pandemic kind of robbed me of a proper goodbye, but I think that, taking everything into account, the online classes went well. This class is definitely the thing I am going to miss the most. It has made me who I am. It brought me closer to some of the best people I have ever met and brought me closer to myself. So all I can really say is...

How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.
