What is a SMART target and why do i need them
SMART targets are an important part of anybody's development whether this is in an education setting or business and workplace.
Specific
When you create your target, you need to ensure that the subject of the goal is specific "complete my course" has too many variables. This could be split into many different targets such as assignments, attendance, punctuality or behaviour. Choose a small objective that you can link to a bigger goal. These targets could be related to your college work or your personal life such as manage my sleep, learn to drive or gain a new past time.

There are five areas to follow to create useful SMART targets If you do not believe in the target you will never follow it through to completion.
Measurable
Your target needs to have some measurable content to it. What is it that you want to have achieved when this target has been completed? Such as raise my attendance in ProPortal by 5% from 80% to 85% this is measurable.

Your SMART targets should be personal to you, there will be areas that as a group target is set by your Tutor that you will need to complete but when you set a target it should be yours.
Achievable
Any target you create will need to be achievable, be honest with yourself will you be able to keep 100% attendance or gain distinctions in every assignment? If you set unachievable targets you will be setting yourself up to fail from the outset. The target should be aspirational but not so unrealistic that you cannot achieve it. I may never be a supermodel, but I could be a photographer.

Following these steps, you will be able to create professional targets that will leave an impact on your study not just tick a box to get something done. Take ownership of your targets.
Realistic
If you have followed the previous sections your objectives should start to become realistically achievable. They should be something that you have control over. Having a realistic target will mean that you, with a little work, can complete your objective in the allocated timeframe.

Once you have set your targets do not forget to review them, this should be done on a weekly basis set time aside each week in your study diary to review and update your targets.
Timed
Your target needs to be within a set timeframe. Adding completion dates and time is the easiest way of achieving this. Try to keep the completion date to the term you are currently in, check your calendar for the end of term dates. Using a short timed window your objective will be kept specific. With measurable, realistic and achievable content, you can now see when you have completed your goal.
