A reminder of Conditionals

1st Conditional (A possible condition and its probable result): If it rains, I will take an umbrella. 2nd Conditional (A hypothetical condition and its probable result): If I won a million dollars, I would buy a sports car. 3rd Conditional ( An unreal past condition and its probable result in the past): If I had studied, I would have passed.

Inverted conditionals is used for academic purposes, it is used to make sentences more formal. Example: Had I known you before I could have told it to you.

  1. Were John here I could have talked to him.
  2. Should I have come here before I could have completed the task.
  3. Had Rick performed better he could have won the contest.
  4. Were you here you could have enjoyed the program.

Replace “if” with “should.” replace the verb with the bare infinitive. (e.g. “goes” →” go,” “has” → “have,” am/is/are → “be”) IF he remembers his own name, we’ll be able to help him.

Should he remember his own name, we’ll be able to help him.

Were he to push the button, we’d all have problems.

Replace “if” with “were.” Change the verb to the infinitive form (with “to”). Example: If he pushed the button, we’d all have problems.

Delete “if.” Invert the subject and the auxiliary. (“we had” → “had we”) Example: If we had arrived sooner, we wouldn't have missed the beginning.

Had we arrived sooner, we wouldn’t have missed the beginning.
