A / an = before a singular, unspecified, countable noun + 1st mention of the noun

An is used when the noun starts with a vowel

European starts with an e but is pronounced y so you cannot use an // MBA starts with an m but is pronounced em so you have to use an.

The = before a specified, already identified noun

When referring to a general class of things, we use a plural or uncountable noun with no article
