Vocabulary and achievement
Let`s reflect on vocabulary essence !!!

Vocabulary and achievement
Building vocabulary is the most basic thing in learning any new language. This is the foundation all your English knowledge rests upon! -viewed as a critical tool for second language learners -contributes to all language skills development (writing, grammar, listening and speaking) -difficult because of tens of thousands of different meanings -difficult because unlike syntax and phonology, vocabulary does not have rules the learners may follow to acquire and develop their knowledge.
When you learn a new word!!!
What do you do in fact?
Effectively supporting students to enrich, deepen, and extend their vocabulary is (so much more) than identifying academic vocabulary, creating lists of words, worksheets, and even direct instruction. It requires a strategic and purposeful approach to supporting student word learning.
effective vocabulary instruction
Teachers should routinely provide opportunities for: -multiple exposures to new vocabulary, -playing games with words to reinforce meaning, -independent reading to build a diverse vocabulary, -front loading vocabulary to expose students to specific vocabulary before reading or listening, -listening to read aloud so that students hear higher-level vocabulary in context, and talking, -listening, and collaborating with peers in order to use their vocabulary.

Create a learning environment
A learning environment that is literacy-rich is not only important for early literacy but supports content-specific learning as well. Depending on student level and the content area, elements of a learning environment that supports interaction and exposure to words include:
effective vocabulary assessment
dimensions of assessmentGeneralization: The ability to define a word Application: Selecting an appropriate use of the word Breadth: Knowledge of multiple meanings of the word (quantity of words) Precision: The ability to apply a term correctly to all situations Availability: The ability to use the word productively
!!!dfferent interactive activities while practising writing, listening, speaking.specific tests that chesk vocabulary breadth and Vocabulary depth.

Marzano’s 6-Step Vocabulary Process
In Building Background Knowledge, Bob Marzano, an educational researcher, laid out a six-step process for building academic vocabulary. It includes direct instruction, linguistic and nonlinguistic definitions, writing word learning in a notebook or journal, talking about words, and playing with words. Multiple exposures are at the heart of the process.

Vocabulary Strategies
vocabulary strategies that effectively assist students in expanding and deepening their vocabulary include:
-providing linguistic definitions of words-having students create a non-linguistic representation of words such as a pictograph, pantomime, or visual to represent words -playing games for reinforcing and playing with words -comparing and contrasting words, and personalizing definitions to deepen understanding.

Anchored Word Learning: Read Alouds with a Purpose
3 Prep Steps read aloud word wall Select a read-aloud. This is an easy step. Choose from books by favorite authors, recommended books, new books, old favorites, picture and trade books. You get the idea. Identify three words for instruction. As teachers preview the book or chapter, select three Tier 2 words that will expand students’ vocabulary and will likely appear in varied contexts. Mark the words with a post-it note. This actually has two steps embedded. First, place a post-it note on the pages where each word appears. Next, write the three words on a separate post-it and place this note inside the front cover of the book. That way, it serves as a reminder of the targeted words when you reread the book the following year. And, doing both these things saves valuable prep time in future years.

Useful digital tools
Word Hippo
Word Sift
Visuwords.com
An all-in-one reference tool, Word Hippo does the following: defines a word, provides a meaning, provides a word that is opposite, pronounces a word, provides rhyming words, places the word in many different contexts, and translates the word. Whew! That’s a lot.
This website is another very helpful tool that can visualise and ‘sift’ passages of text in helpful ways. From creating word-clouds based on word frequency, to then unpicking key words and connecting them together, this website has lots of interesting applications for vocabulary learning.
This website freely does what it says on the tin: creating interesting graphic visuals for your word choices.

There are a number of tools to support direct vocabulary instruction that fall into the following categories: reference tools (e.g., Visual Online Dictionary), word clouds (e.g., Tagxedo), games (e.g., Free Rice), concept maps (e.g., MindMap), word walls (e.g., Padlet), SAT and ACT Preparation (e.g., Vocabador) and classroom assessment (e.g., Kahoot!)

So how do I find visuals to use in the classroom? The internet provides educators with access to dozens of free, searchable databases of images. Pixabay, Morguefile, Flickr, Classroom Clipart, and Openclipart are some of my favorites for locating great visuals.
