MINDMAP

Simple machines have a few or no moving parts.

SIMPLE MACHINES

You are going to learn about three simple machines:

INCLINED PLANES, PULLEYS AND LEVERS are used to move heavy things.

AN INCLINED PLANE ( A RAMP) is a tilted surface which goes from a low point to a high point. It is used to move a heavy object. the smaller the incline, the easier it is to move the heavy object up and down.

A PULLEY is used to lift and lower heavy things. It is made up of a wheel and a rope or a cable.

The wheel has a groove in it and the rope goes around the wheel. HOW IT WORKS: When you pull down on one end of the rope the other end goes up.

SIMPLE MACHINES

A LEVER is made up of a rigid bar and a fulcrum. How it works: When we push down on one end of the rigid bar, the other end goes up. 3 different levers:

He was an Ancient Greek mathematician, engineer, inventor and astronomer.

ARCHIMEDES

He lived in Syracuse more thatn 2000 years ago.

He invented among others: The Archimedes' screw and the Archimedes' Claw.

ARCHIMEDES' SCREW is used to transfer water from deep areas to higher areas. It is made up of a screw inside of a hollow pipe. how it works: The screw is turned around by hand using a crank.

ARCHIMEDES' CLAW is a weapon made to defend the city of Syracuse from Roman invaders. The CLAW had a hook that could lift an attacking ship. This would cause that the ship to sink.

Water is taken in at the bottom and travels up the screw as it rotates.

ISAAC NEWTON

LAW OF GRAVITY

He was an English mathematician, astronomer and physicist. He was born in 1643 and he lived in England. He discovered: THE THREE LAWS OF MOTION and THE LAW OF GRAVITY

FIRST LAW OF MOITION

IMPORTANT INVENTIONS IN HISTORY

THE WHEEL3500 BC

THE COMPASS200 BC it was invented in China

Before it was invented, navigators had to use landmarks to find the way

IMPORTANT INVENTIONS IN HISTORY

It was invented by Thomas Edison. Before it, people used oil lamps to iluminate theis homes

THE LIGHT BULB AD 1879

IIt was invented by the Wright Brothers. It made people could travel long journeys quicker and easier.

THE AEROPLANE AD 1903

It was the first computer that people had in their homes. It was used to prepare documents. Now, we have access to Internet.

THE PERSONAL COMPUTERAD 1974
