PASSIVE VOICE + VERB PATTERNS

(The verb pattern that needs ING)

being + 3rd column (or -ed )

AFTER CERTAIN VERBS WE USE:

I hate it when people interrupt me. I hate being interrupted HATE + BEING + -ed

Because I love interrupting people...

* I hate being told to be at home. * Baby, do you enjoy being hurt ? * Peter denied being asked to kill the man.

EXAMPLES:

kEVIN HATES BEING IGNORED

AGUSTIN loves being told that they like his food

MARY enjoys being told that she dances very well.

EXAMPLES

TO BE + 3RD COLUMN (OR -ED)

AFTER CERTAIN VERBS WE USE:

WANT + TO BE + -ed

She wants to be loved

She wants them to love her

Homer refuses to be told to go to church !!!

1. She refuses to be given orders.
2. They prefer not to be told what to do.
3. My sister decided not to be taken to the doctor.

EXAMPLES:

It was encouraged to be done !

JOHN refuses to be helped by anybody.

PHILIP needs to be helped in Maths.

EXAMPLES

BEING + 3RD COLUMN / ED

After prepositions we use:

Every actor dreams of being nominated

TONY doesn´t like his birthday being postponed.

EXAMPLES

DAVID is sick of being told about his patience.

TO BE + 3RD COLUMN (OR -ED)

After THE FIRST, THE SECOND, THE LAST (+NOUN) we use:

Rossy was the second person to be given 5 points for her meme !!!!! MMMMM my teacher did not understand the meme

Laura Chinchilla was the first woman to be elected president of Costa Rica.

EXAMPLES

A woman was the first person to be discharged from hospital, for coronavirus in Buenos Aires.

BE + 3RD COLUMN / ED

After modals we use

THE PARCEL WILL BE SENT TOMORROW

They will send the parcel tomorrow.
