Informal Letter

A guide to write a letter to a friend, family member, or anyone you like!

STEP 1

As in any writing, the first thing you have to think about is the topic.

When you write a letter of this kind, you usually have something to communicate. Everything should be centered on that topic. Brainstorm ideas, write them down, and choose a topic!

I got it! I will write about my last holidays!

STEP 2

Start your letter with the date and a greeting. Then, add the initial comments.

April 10th Dear Jake, Hi! I'm writing to tell you about my last holidays!

STEP 3

Now, it's time for the most important part of your letter: The MAIN BODY.

Do you remember? We talked about the main body in the e-mail. Again, while writing a letter, you have to organize your ideas in paragraphs. Each paragraph should deal with one topic only. These are called SUB-TOPICS, because they derive from the main topic!

Let's imagine this: After you decide to write about your last holidays, you have to think about which SUB-TOPICS you want to tell your friend about! Look at these examples.

Sub-topic: Activities. Tell your friend what you did there.

Sub-topic: Tell a short anecdote about your trip.

Sub-topic: Destination. Write a short description of the place.

TOPIC: MY LAST HOLIDAYS

We went to Mexico last summer, and it was our first time there! The beaches are beautiful, the weather was really warm, and the hotel was super luxurious! There were really tall palm trees, and the sand was white! When we went to the beach, we had the opportunity to practice a lot of sports! We went scuba-diving, and surfing! After having lunch, we went into the sea all afternoon, and made some sandcastles. When the sun was going down, we played beach football. It was awesome! One day, I was really hot and I wanted to swim. I went into the sea, and swam a lot. After some time, I realized I was tired, and I stood up in the sea. I started looking at the shore, but I cuoldn't recognize anything! I was lost! I went out of the water and I started walking back, until I found my family. It was really scary!

STEP 4

Finish the letter with a warm, closing comment, a greeting and your name as a signature.

I wish you were there with us! It was really fun! What about you? What did you do your last holidays? Your friend, David.

Congratulations! You have finished writing your letter!

IT SHOULD LOOK LIKE THIS!
