History

recalls

In many countries today women have the same rights as men. They have the right to own property, to get an education, to work at any job they choose. They have the right to vote, to be elected president or prime minister of their country. But it has not always been this way. Women called feminists worked for many years to get these rights.

"In my simple worldview, if you believe in equality, you should be a feminist."

Jacinda Ardern, New Zealand's Prime Minister

True or False

Through much of history, people thought women were naturally weaker and less smart than men.

TRUE

Some myths and religions even presented women as a source of evil, so they were not treated as equals with men.

OVER TO YOU

Do you know any stories in which women are considered inferior or dangerous?

True or False

Queen Elizabeth I (1533-1603) of England never got married.

TRUE

She became queen at 25, ruled England for 45 years and defied the parliament, saying she had married her country.

OVER TO YOU

Did we have a queen in Brazil too? Which other countries have kings/queens nowadays?

True or False

In the late 1700s, people in Europe and North America started to talk of individual freedom, but they didn't include women because they used the expression “the rights of man.”

TRUE

They said that people had rights that governments must respect, but that didn't include women.

OVER TO YOU

Do you think men and women also had different rights in Brazil?

True or False

Mary Wollstonecraft (1759-1797) was an English nurse.

FALSE

She was a writer and one of the first women to fight for the rights of women. She wrote that women should have the same opportunities as men in education, work and politics.

OVER TO YOU

Do you remember the names of any other women who are writers?

True or False

Women didn't think the right to vote was important to change their situation.

FALSE

They knew it was the only way to take part in the government and influence policies and laws.

OVER TO YOU

Do you remember the names of any women who are politicians?

OVER TO YOU

Were you surprised with the timeline? What surprised you? Why?

True or False

In our present world, women don't always have the same salaries, opportunities and job positions as men.

TRUE

In some countries, the government had to create laws to help women get the same salary for the same job, making it illegal to leave some jobs for men and others for women.

OVER TO YOU

Do you think men and women are really different (in terms of capacities for a job, for example)?

True or False

Around the world, 1 in 4 boys between 15 and 19 years old can't work or study (compared to 1 in 10 girls).

FALSE

It's the opposite! Many girls still receive less support than boys to continue their studies. Discriminatory teaching practices and education materials also produce gender gaps in learning and skills development.

OVER TO YOU

Do you think it is important for children to have the right to education? Why?

WE HAVE COME A LONG WAY, BUT STILL HAVE WORK TO DO...

In many places, women are still seen with prejudice if they choose jobs that are not very traditional for women.

Many girls don't have the right to or can't study in Middle Eastern and African countries.

In many countries, especially in the Middle East, women still can't have an equal participation in society as men.

Many women still don't get the same salaries as men, for the same jobs and positions.
