Our project

This magazine is the final product of a project carried out by the IBQ English Department during the Covid-19 lockdown with students from different grades of our school.

We have carried out this activity on the premises of the Wonder Ponder project, encouraging our students to think (wonder) and reflect on (ponder) the consequencs of the pandemic we are living through

What concerns you about the general situation? I’m worried about the summer. I wanted to travel abroad and I think it might be forbidden. What don’t you like about lockdown? I miss my friends. I also miss playing chess tournaments. Can you imagine living like this for a hole year? Oh my God, NO! This would be insane I couldn’t do it. Finally, what is like to have school at home? Well, it is a bit weird but I've got used to it and now I kind of like it. Besides school classes, I also have online chess classes every day

How is your family coping with the situation? Well, honestly, my grandma is bored and she feels a bit lonely. That’s because before the confinement I used to visit her frequently. Do you think the media is answering all your concerns? I think they are hiding some relevant information as they always do. Do you think this is a situation we might learn from? Of course I do. We might learn how to overcome this weird situation. Have you had the virus? Luckily, I haven't. In my town the virus didn’t affect too many people What helps you cope with this situation? I try to keep in touch with my friends as much as a can. I usually with video calls

What is the hardest thing about lockdown? The hardest thing is to see people not following the rules. Because of that, I can’t see my friends and the people I love. This causes more infections and deaths and that’s exhausting. What’s it like to have school at home? I don’t like it because the teachers send us more homework than we used to do, so it takes me longer to do it and I rarely have free time. I would prefer online classes with the teachers and doing an ordinary class but in a videocall. I think that with this we could be more organized and the students would probably have less homework.

- Name: Aroa. - Age: 16. - School year or grade: 1BTO of arts. - Place and country of lockdown: Asturias, Mieres. - Time under lockdown so far: 59 days. - Who you are under lockdown with: my family. - How you’ve been coping up to now: I have been literaly doing homework every day but for the first days. Only when I finished them I can do what I want and I always finish them on Sunday evening and on Monday the teachers send us more homework so I just have an afternoon entirely for myself.

What do you ask yourself? I ask myself how we are going to live after this. I think it is going to be difficult because we will have to maintain the distance between our families and we won’t have freedom to move wherever we want and it will be difficult to have holidays out of our province.

What don’t you like about lockdown? I don ́t like being separated from my friends, I miss them a lot and I’m always worried about my family who lives in Madrid, especially my grandparents.

Are you free? Do you feel free? We aren’t free because we must wear a mask and we can’t hug our friends. But I think that when all this finishes there will be more love in the world. What helps you cope with the situation? Do you have any suggestions for people who are not coping so well? When I feel exhausted, I talk to my friends and they help me, so I recommend people to talk to anyone ready to listen.

What activities have you done? I have painted, and I have sewn some clothes. I have watched TV and I've seen some series. I have also played at table games with my brother like Catan.

What is coronavirus? It is a virus that causes a disease in humans and animals. In humans it causes respiratory infections. Do you think this is a situation we might learn from? I think we can learn from this situation because being for so long at home without going out teaches us how to live better, to respect the safety rules and to improve when it comes to personal hygiene. Can you imagine living like this for a whole year? I can’t imagine this situation for a whole year because it’s very difficult to be at home unable to leave your house and I can’t imagine a year without beach, meeting my friends or without a swimming pool. What helps you cope with the situation? It helps me thinking that all of what are we doing is for a better future and to overcome all this situation.

María García 1ºBachillerato A

Do you miss going to class? I miss going to class because I miss my classmates and friends and my favorite teachers. Has anyone caught your attention during confinement? Yes, yesterday the police caught my attention for not respecting the safety distance with my brother.

THE REALITY OF LOCKDOWN What don’t you like about lockdown? From my point of view the worst part about the lockdown is that I don’t have a permanent routine. Is there anything you like about it? What?

The best thing about the lockdown is that the World is taking a break from all of us,so that the environment is clean, animals aren’t killed and also the ocean is much cleaner. Besides, this lockdown has made me see who I truly have in my life and who I have not.

THE VIRUS Why have these lockdown measures been taken? Because the virus spreads very easily and very fast, but it won’t be able to spread if there is nobody where to live .

YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH THE DISEASE Do you have or have you had Covid-19? I had some typical symptoms of Covid-19. I didn’t have taste and smell for two weeks but I didn’t have temperature and I didn’t feel bad either.

THE EXPERIENCE OF SCHOOL AT HOME What’s it like to have school at home? I don’t like it at all, I want to go back to school at all costs, I know that it is impossible now but I would like to go back.

LEARNING FROM THIS Do you think this is a situation we might learn from? Yes, because people have to learn about solidarity and honesty. What kind of lesson might we learn from this situation? People are egocentric, they don’t see further than their feet. People must help other people, they must learn how to collaborate with the Government and with other people

What would is the coronavirus?

I would say that it is a virus that has appeared for a reason. I have always been very superstitious and I believe in Karma, so I think that this virus has sprung up because of all the bad things that happen in the world. This is my guess about the coronavirus but it's actually a virus which only affected animals and that, after mutating, is now affecting humans, mainly damaging their respiratory system

Are you scared of the virus?

Not really, if I get infected because it is what it is, I will fight to overcome it and that’s all, but I'll take care not just for me. I am not scared but I take the preventive measures, also for the people I live with, so we can say that it doesn't scare me, but I take precautions for myself and for everyone.

Title 1

Do you worry about how the virus was affecting in the world?

How is the confinement going? Is it pleasant or overwhelming? How do you feel knowing that June 1 is coming soon and you may be celebrating your birthday in confidence?

Yes, I couldn't have imagined that this would reach these levels, I thought that today's society was qualified enough to fight a pandemic, but I see that it was not like that. This makes me think that, despite how much they say and do, we are still humans and we commit many mistakes, and in turn we tell many lies. So from now onwards, I would prefer not to believe anything that is not based on facts or scientifically justified, as when they claimed that Spain was not going to be affected by the virus.

Well, the confinement.. It could be said that I am doing well, I have to say that as I get bored I get more time for class assignments, for amusement of some teachers. As regards myebirthday... I asked for an iPhone X hehehehe, so I'm happy .

Did you ever think that this virus could come out of Wuhan, in this case, and cause everything that is now causing it on a global scale?

I did not believe that this could happen, nor that the virus was so contagious, because I thought that society was more developed and prepared, but I see that it is not. It had been impossible for me to think about what we are going through and what we are currently experiencing

Hello, my name is Claudia García Moreno and I am a 17 year old teenager. I currently study 1st year of Baccalaureate A, at the I.E.S Bernaldo de Quirós in Mieres (Asturias, Spain). During this lockdown I am at home (Pola de Lena) with my parents and my little sister. We have been In this situation for two months and with the support of everyone at home it gets a little better. I like to read and share games, laughs and jokes with my sister, so time passes quickly and it is easier to be confined at home

How is school learning carried out from home? It is different, because sometimes I have doubts or I don't know how to solve certain exercises.

In class, those doubts were solved since we had the teacher in the classroom, and although in this situation doubsts are also solved, you can no longer depend on the teacher and I try to solve them alone or sometimes with the help of my parents. Whenever I have any important question, my family is there to help and advise me.

Title 1

I think they do not care or are not aware of the danger that this entails and these facts that I see make me uncomfortable and afraid of being able to get infected.

What is your daily life like, compared to what you had before confinement? The truth is that it has changed a little, but I always try to keep the habits I used to have (I get up and go to bed at the same time, I spend my study hours every day, I enjoy my leisure time, I do a little sport, I am with the family sharing moments ...). Where I have noticed it the most is in the relationship with classmates, because although with technology I do it, it is not the same as face to face communication.

How do you see the situation for the return to classes in September? The situation I see is good, because if we continue with preventive measures there won’t be a rebound of the disease and all this sacrifice will not be in vain. If we continue like this, I think that going back to school will be a reality, although it will take us a while to return to the normality with which we previously saw things. Although some steps have to be taken for the next course, the decisions made will surely be appropriate for everyone (students and teachers).

Do you have enough technological means for learning? Yes, I have my own computer, mobile or tablet and I can also have my parents' computer, although when we are all connected, the internet connection usually hungs up. This sometimes delays doing and sending my work

What preferences have changed in your routine? Now I give much more importance to being with the family, to outdoor activities, namely enjoying a sunny day, a walk, a chat between friends, things that were routine before and I did not appreciate properly because they were done on a daily basis. Now I have learnt that routine things have to be enjoyed every day as if it was the last one.

Do you feel safe or afraid of the disease? I am always a bit scared , because although I go out for a while and always with the protections (mask, gloves and hand sanitizer), I see that some people on the street take this as a joke and they do not respect security measures.

Title 1

The other good side of the disease has been to see how people have helped and remained fighting in the front line , even when there were insufficient means and the serious extent of the disease was not known. There are few daily applauses that we send them, but it is our way of saying 'Thank you for everything you do'

What lesson do you think we should draw from this situation as a society in general? There are two typical phrases that we usually pronounce: "don't leave for tomorrow what you can do today" and "less is more". Things must be appreciated every moment, because we do not know when we will lose them. With this disease we have lost a very important one, the freedom to decide what to do and when to do it. But above all, we must learn that no matter how far a disease is and although we may think that it will never touch us, we must always take it very seriously, because perhaps any other day it may reach us. We have been able to verify it with this pandemic that we had seen very far away (China) and soon we suffered it here.

Do you think we will learn from this situation? Yes, I think we will learn a lot, because this situation has been very overwhelming for everyone and it has caused a lot of damage to families (deaths, ERTEs ...). We have never been in a situation like this and it has overwhelmed us.

Karlota Yttusaka 1ºBachillerato A

What’s like to have school at home? Is there anything you would change? It’s strange but also worthwhile because I’ve learnt to be even more independent. I would like the people that have the power above education to think more about students that don’t have as many facilities as others. For example, I’m really upset about the poor guidelines they have given to college students. Do you think your life and the world will change after this situation? In what way? Yes, I do. People will think twice before touching things on the streets like streetlights and before taking a free tapa at a restaurant.

What is a weekday under lockdown like? I do my homework and I talk with my friends through face time or similar apps. Besides that, I like to have my free time destined to keep my brain busy, such as learning new things, watching Youtube vids, movies or series, talk with my parents or cooking. What is a weekend day under lockdown like? Weekends feel empty without seeing my friends. I used to go out on Fridays but now everything has changed. I use weekends for resting and self-care. What is the hardest thing about lockdown? I find not being able to visit my grandmother and my sister the hardest thing about it. Before self quarantine, I used to go to my grandmother’s house often so I miss them pretty much.

Summing up, people will be more concerned about their hygiene and health. Personally, I have always thought about those type of things but I tried to control my mind and not being obsessed with it.

Title 1

What helps you cope with the situation? Do you have any suggestions for people who are not coping so well? I try to keep my mind busy doing things like homework, cooking or watching series. I suggest trying new recipes (I have learnt how to make muffins, pancakes and cheesecake) or find a long series that won’t make you waste time thinking about what series would you watch (I’m watching all seaons from “Grey’s Anathomy” for the second time and discovered a show called “Community” which is similar to “The Office”)

What do you think about people breaking the rules? I think they haven’t faced the real situation and they feel like nothing is happening and their acts don’t have consequences.

What is the first you are going to do when you can go out? Yesterday it was the first day since the lockdown started I saw my friends. I had a really amazing time with them. Although I can’t have physical contact, this week I will visit my grandmother and my sister, in addition to their cat, Toñín.

Do you think it is important to stay at home? OF COURSE it is!! In fact... I think we should be more time (longer) in quarantine. I think the government made a bad decision letting people going out now because some humans are … let’s say … less brilliant and they don’t respect the rules like staying 2m away from each other. There will be a regrowth of the disease and it’ll be worse, only because some people can’t let their butts at home... and besides that, quarantine was really good for the environment and animals. What don’t you like about lockdown ? I have never liked to go outside very often but there is a huge difference between going out a few times a week and not going out at all. I think I miss school a little bit and school also helped me being more organized. I don’t like being here with my sister, because we fight a lot... don’t get me wrong, I love her and we have fun together, but we are very different and that leads to fights sometimes.

Who are you locked up with ?I live with my mother, my sister, my nephew, my cat and my dog. How are the adults in your life coping with the situation? I guess they are doing fine but my mother is worried about what will happen and how will this whole situation affect the world. I can understand her. Do you know anyone who has died from complications related to coronavirus? Well, my father’s aunt and cousin died but they were not old or sick. The thing is they lived in Peru, which is a country that has bad public health so people keep dying in Peru from simple stuff like a wound. I didn’t know them but it’s sad in general that people suffer and die from this disease.

Title 1

If you are a person who doesn't like to listen to music then I think the best thing to do is try new things out. It may be a sport, a talent, a skill … whatever, now we can do everything we have ever wanted to try and we have never done or get better in something.

Can you imagine living like this for a whole year? If I had to I would try to make the best out of the situation but it’d be very difficult. I guess I would try to find new hobbies or focus on something specifically. I couldn’t be one year doing nothing at all.

What would you ask a psychologist? Psychology is something I really find very interesting and I really care about. I would ask him/her how can the lockdown affect someone who already had mental health issues. What’s it like to have school at home ? I actually feel more pressure. I am new in this school and now I have to learn everything that I didn’t have at home and sometimes it is too stressful. I would much rather go to school at 5 am than having school at home.

What kind of lesson might we learn from this situation? We go around thinking everything is going to be okay, that our lives will turn out good, that nothing special will happen but we don’t think about what the alternative is. We don’t think about what could happen if world war 3 starts, if someone very essential in our live dies, .... if a new disease kills a lot of humans and makes us stay at home for months. Maybe something little may cause the biggest twist in your life, we can’t know what will happen, so don’t take anything for granted. Life isn’t insured.

What helps you cope with the situation? Do you have any suggestions for people who are not coping so well? Music... Music is everything people need. I personally LOVE old music. From the 40s to the early 2000s. I could listen to music the whole day. I also play electric guitar and I really love it.

What don't you like about lockdown? What I don´t like about being lockdown is that I can´t see my friends and my relatives. Is there anything you don't understand that you'd like to understand better? What? I don´t understand why people don´t follow the rules.

I'm Lucía and I'm 16 years old, and I‘m in the 4º grade and I live in Asturias, Spain. I have been under lockdown for 58 days with my parents and I have been coping upmwell, without any problem

Do you feel the media is answering your questions and concerns? Most of the media is giving its opinion without knowing or without any medical knowledge…

What helps you cope with the situation? What I usually do to cope this situation is Facetime my Friends and to watch Netflix. What's it like to have school at home? Well, it is more boring because you cannot be with your classmate and you miss some of my teacher.

Do you think your life is going to change after this? If you think so, in what way do you think it will change? I can't help feeeling that my life is going to change especially when it comes to hang out with my friends, go shopping…

What kind of lesson might we learn from this situation? I would say that from this situation we will learn to react faster to a situation like this. -

“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies . . . The man who never reads lives only one.” – George R.R. Martin
