When the government put out a call for 250,000 volunteers, more than 400,000 signed up in 24 hours to deliver prescriptions or help transport patients to hospital for essential, non-coronavirus -related appointments. https://www.speakeasy-news.com/
It was so successful, she's been asked by others to make similar graphic statements, including a tribute to children in lockdown who are drawing and painting rainbows to be put up in hospital wards to cheer patients up. As well as the hundreds of thousands of NHS workers, volunteers have stepped up to help.

Banksy Portrays Nurse as a Superhero
METHOD
Thursday 07 May 2020
The new Bansky artwork portrays a nurse as superhero. The painting shows a young boy choosing a nurse as the superhero he wants to play with over Batman and Spiderman. The painting was unveiled at University Hospital Southampton, in southern England. An image of the work was also posted on Banksy's Instagram page with the caption "Game Changer." Hospital chief executive Paula Head said: "So proud to reveal this amazing piece of art, "Painting for Saints", created by Banksy as a thank you to all those who work with and for the NHS and our hospital."
"An inspirational backdrop to pause and reflect in these unprecedented times," she added on Twitter. The new painting will be on display at the hospital until after the lockdown and it will then be auctioned for NHS charities, according to the BBC. https://www.speakeasy-news.com/

Brits are gearing up to raise money for charity with Sport Relief on 13 March. The high-energy version of Comic Relief is asking people to lace up their running shoes, put on their swimsuits or get on their bikes to tackle issues such as mental health stigma, domestic abuse, homelessness and poverty, both in the UK and around the world. In the two years since the last Sport Relief, the money raised has helped 13 million people in the UK and in the developing world. The campaign traditionally asks various celebrities to do sporting challenges on film in order to encourage the general public to do the same. This year group of eight presenters, journalists and DJs had agreed to walk, run, and bike 100 miles across a frozen lake in Mongolia. But given the uncertainty of safety because of the coronavirus outbreak, a
new challenge has been fined for them. It couldn’t be more different from the first. They are going to undertake a four-day, 100 mile expedition across the Namib desert in Nambia instead. They will cover the distance on foot, by bike and by ski.Schools are always enthusiastic participants in sport relief and this year they can do it in music with a great song. They can also participate in a competition for which the winning school will win a visit from double Olympic gold medallist and World Champion gymnast Max Whitlock. https://www.speakeasy-news.com/
Effects of Sleep Deprivation: : Here’s how that affects sports, school and health
METHOD

Getting more sleep Given the negative repercussions of sleep deprivation, Carskadon and others say it is important to help teenagers embrace helpful techniques. “One of the ways to help teens control sleep patterns is to educate them about the importance of limiting screens before bed and turning off lights,” Carskadon says, adding that turning on lights in the morning when a teen rises and it’s still dark outside is important to increase wakefulness. www.teenkidsnews.com
Have you ever been told by your parents to get enough sleep now because in 10 years you’ll run the risk of being depressed and overweight? If so, you probably didn’t get the complete story. Lack of sleep can hurt your GPA* and SAT* scores, along with your performance on the school athletic team — right now. (It can also make you more likely to have skin problems, make you sick so you miss school and increase a risk of having a car accident.) (…) Experts say getting teens to manage their sleep better would help them in many ways that are particularly important to them at this time of life.

Sleep for the Planet
METHOD
Thursday 19th march 2020
It takes place in March each year and the slogan for the 2020 event was “Better Sleep, Better Life, Better Planet.” On a simple level, during the time we spend sleeping, we use fewer resources - fuel, electricity, food and even oxygen, as breathing is attenuated during sleep. But on a more long-term level, better, and more, sleep means better health overall. Sleep plays a major role in immune function - something we all need right now.
As many of us get used to spending much more time than usual at home during the Covid-19 outbreak, it seems a perfect time to catch up on some of that sleep we all keep saying we don't get enough of. And it turns out we could help the planet at the same time. World Sleep Day was started by healthcare professionals working on sleep disorders and sleep research. It aims to raise awareness about the importance of this natural process
Poor sleep or lack of sleep is linked to increased cardiovascular risk. In the U.S.A., one in four adult deaths is caused by cardiovascular problems. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the U.S. had declared insufficient sleep a national health epidemic. Its surveys find that over 30% don't get the recommended 7-9 hours sleep per night. For teenagers, the problem is worse, with 60-70 per cent, increasing with age, not sleeping enough. So if you want to use your virus protection confinement usefully to get into the habit of better sleep, here are some tips, from the World Sleep Society. https://www.speakeasy-news.com/
How a 16-year-old girl started a multimillion dollar social network
June 1, 2017
METHOD
Juliette Brindak started a social networking site for tweens when she was 16, and it’s doing better than ever. Miss O And Friends generates 10 million monthly visits, a twenty-fold increase from its inception in 2005. It’s also worth around $15 million, according to early investor Procter & Gamble. When she was ten, Brindak drew characters for a set of five friends she called “Cool Girls,” who were all inspired by real-life girls. The main cool girl, Miss O, represents her younger sister Olivia. The set of “Cool Girls” would eventually become “Miss O And Friends.” In the beginning — like many startups — Brindak reached out to family members and friends for investment money.
Her mother, a graphic designer, brought her drawings to life while her father, who has a background in business, aided in the fundamentals of creating the company. What started out as a few sketches on the way home from a family vacation quickly ballooned into a haven for millions of adolescents. The site was ranked the third largest girls-only Web site in 2011, according to Inc. Magazine. (…) Now, at 23, Brindak isn’t as in tune with what tween girls are looking for, so she uses the site as an avenue to understand their needs. Through polls, quizzes, and the “Girl2Girl” wall, members are able to keep Brindak updated. www.teenkidsnews.com

Florence Nightingale: Nursing Pioneer
Wednesday 06 May 2020
Florence Nightingale is one of Britain's most recognisable names. The Victorian nursing pioneer and statistician left an indelible mark on the world of medicine. The first woman ever to be featured on a British banknote, her influence is such that 200 years after her birth, the emergency hospitals created for the coronavirus pandemic in the UK have been named Nightingales.Nightingale was born in 1820 into a rich and modern-thinking English family that gave Florence and her sister the type of education normally reserved for boys. Yet, when, as a logical result of the education she had received, Florence developed a passion for medicine and wanted to become a nurse, she was met with parental disapproval. While nursing was considered a woman's job, it wasn't for the likes of Florence. Respectable young ladies didn't work at all. Nurses were at best employed in homes, and therefore the equivalent of servants. At worst, they worked in hospitals,
(...). Nonetheless, Florence turned down a series of marriage proposals and used her "Grand Tour" of Europe to visit what nursing schools there were. She eventually got a job in charge of the nurses in London hospital. (…) She lived to the ripe old age of 90, and remained a popular figure. She never did give in to pressure to marry. She was the first woman to appear on a British bank note: from 1975 to 1992 she adorned the £10 note. Her birthday, 12 May, is celebrated annually around the world as International Nurses Day. (…) The Florence Nightingale Museum in London is based in St Thomas's Hospital where she opened her nursing school.(...) https://www.speakeasy-news.com/
Saving Proms 2020
So when most 2020 proms were cancelled, many students tried to find ways to reproduce some of the prom experience. Dressing up in the outfit planned for the prom, or ones improvised with the clothes available. They joined virtual proms, which often attracted many more attendees than there were students at the schools. (…) Actor John Kraskinski has been hosting a YouTube programme from his home called Some Good News. (…) He decided to hold a virtual prom for students all over the country. More than 200,000 people tuned into a live stream, not just those missing their prom this year, but some who hadn't been invited to their own prom back in the day. Kraskinski got into the festive mood with a tuxedo over a prom dress, and persuaded guests Chance the Rapper, the Jonas Brothers and Billie Eilish to provide that prom essential: music. https://www.speakeasy-news.com/

Many teenagers in the U.S. have been terribly disappointed to miss those major life milestones that are their high-school proms and graduations this year. But they’ve been using great ingenuity to still have memories to keep for ever. High school senior year in the U.S. is a time for rites and traditions. Yearbook, Senior Prom and graduation are all time-honored traditions that even non-Americans feel part of thanks to their ubiquitous presence in films, books and TV series. Many students plan for months, or even years ahead for the prom. Having the perfect clothes and the perfect date (to whom they make a "promposal") is an obsession. Sharing a limousine to the event, having photos taken, choosing the Prom King and Queen are all essential elements.
Women are more likely to live in poverty than men – It Doesn’t Have to Be Like This

domestic work. This means that women have less time available for paid work. It explains why women tend to work part-time, take career breaks and be seen as less committed to work and discriminated against by employers. (…) But it doesn’t have to be like this. Having access to an individual and autonomous income is the best safeguard against poverty both in the present and in the future. So we need to make sure that barriers to women’s employment are eliminated, through investment in childcare, adult social care and public transport, and in encouraging fathers to take their share of care responsibilities in the family. Benefits should also be designed to ensure that every individual has access to a fair income in their own right. www.teenkidsnews.com
Poverty has a female face. Women earn less than men, have lower incomes over a lifetime and are more likely to be poor in old age. 47% of single parents are living in poverty – the vast majority of them women. And poverty levels are rising – the number of children living in poverty has increased from 27% in 2012/13 to 30% last year. (…) A new report by the Women’s Budget Group explores why this is happening – showing that the traditional division of labour, with men still seen as the main breadwinner and women as the main carer, and a lack of adequate state support means that women are more likely to fall into poverty and to remain poor. Women’s greater responsibility for care work is fundamental to understanding women’s poverty. Throughout the world women are assumed to have primary responsibility for caring and

Ending fear and division is a tall order in this anxious world. But it’s not a new one. Special Olympics has been working on this problem for 50 years. Our athletes themselves have led the charge, joined by parents, educators and volunteers. And here is what we’ve found: Inclusion can be taught. It can be learned. And when nurtured, it can take root as a belief system rather than as passing kindness. It can become embedded in a person’s core values, just like respect, empathy and citizenship. Fortunately, it seems the vast majority of young people today are already more inclusive than any other generation in history. They want their schools and communities to be as inclusive as they are. And these young people are willing to lead, if we give them the chance. www.teenkidsnews.com

Young people have found an antidote to divisiveness. They are uniting around a new idea, drawing closer, jump-starting friendships, breaking down social barriers and bringing outsiders in. The idea is a new kind of school sports team in which athletes with and without intellectual disabilities play together. It may sound radical, but it’s incredibly simple. And it’s happening right now, through a growing program called Special Olympics Unified Sports. Schools that “play unified” have shown stunning improvements in their climates of tolerance, with more participation and less bullying. Tens of thousands of athletes participate in unified sports, in more than 6,400 elementary, middle and high schools across the United States. It should be millions. (…)
Is texting ruining the art of conversation? Fear we are losing ability to have traditional face-to-face conversations

Anna Schiferl hadn’t even rolled out of bed when she reached for her cell phone and typed a text to her mom, one recent Saturday. Mom was right downstairs in the kitchen. The text? Anna wanted cinnamon rolls for breakfast. Soon after, the 13-year-old could hear mom’s voice echoing through the house. “Anna,” Joanna Schiferl called, “if you want to talk to me, you come downstairs and see me!” Anna laughs about it now. “I was kind of being lazy,” the teen from suburban Chicago concedes. “I know that sounds horrible.” Well, maybe not horrible, but certainly increasingly typical. Statistics from the Pew Internet & American Life Project show that, these days, many people with cell phones prefer texting over a phone call. It’s not always young people, though the data indicate that the younger you are, the more likely you are to prefer texting.
And that’s creating a communication divide, of sorts — the talkers vs. the texters. Some would argue that it’s no big deal. What difference should it make how we communicate, as long as we do so? But many experts say the most successful communicators will have the ability to do both, talk or text, and know the most appropriate times to use those skills. And they fear that more of us are losing our ability to have — or at least are avoiding — the traditional face-to-face conversations that are vital in the workplace and personal relationships. “It is an art that’s becoming as valuable as good writing,” says Janet Sternberg, a professor of communication and media studies at Fordham University in New York who is also a linguist. In the most extreme cases, she’s noticed that more students don’t look her in the eye and have trouble with the basics of direct conversation — habits that, she says, will not serve them well as they enter a world where many of their elders still expect an in-person conversation, or at the very least a phone call. www.teenkidsnews.com
Hidden Figures: Nasa renames street after black female mathematicians

METHOD

The Washington DC street's name is a nod to the title of a book and film about the lives of Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson. They made significant contributions to space flight in the 1960s. But their successes and struggles were not widely known until decades later."'Hidden Figures' is about taking off our blinders and recognising the contributions of the unseen individuals who were there at the beginning of the story," Margot Lee Shetterly, who wrote the 2016 book which inspired the Oscar-nominated film, told the audience gathered in Washington."And whose persistence and whose courage delivered us to where we are today."Ms Shetterly attended the unveiling of the street sign alongside members of each woman's family.
Republican Senator Ted Cruz, who cosponsored a bill to rename the block, said he hoped the name would inspire future generations. (...)"This sign is a powerful testament that anyone who is telling a little girl or a little boy 'You can't do something', is not telling the truth." Nasa began recruiting some college-educated African American women in the 1940s as "human computers", but they experienced both racial and gender discrimination at work. The renaming of the street comes ahead of 50th anniversary of the first moonwalk by NASA astronauts on 20 July.Nasa recently announced it would send Americans back to the moon by 2024, including the first woman to walk on its surface.Fewer than 11% of the 500-plus people who have travelled to space have been women, the space agency said. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-48617919
