Look at this example Direct speech: "I have practice tonight". Reported speech: She said (that) she had practice tonight.

The subject changes from first person to third person.

We use a reporting verb such as say. We can use the word that or leave it out.

Tenses change when we change a direct speech sentence into reported speech. From simple present to simple past.

Take a moment to identify the changes: subject and tense.

In this example, the tense was not simple present, but present progressive. So it changes into past progressive.

In this example, the tense doesn't change because the statement is always true.
