CONDITIONALS

BY EVA AND IRAITZ

If

CONDITIONALS

We use conditional sentences to talk about the consequences of things that happen...

If I wake up early, I arrive on time.

CONDITIONALS

They have 2 parts: IF CLAUSE and MAIN CLAUSE.

If I wake up early, I arrive on time.

IF CLAUSE

MAIN CLAUSE

THERE ARE 4 CONDITIONALS BUT WE ARE GOING TO LEARN ONLY TWO:

THE ZERO CONDITIONAL

AND

THE FIRST CONDITIONAL

They are very easy!!!

We use ZERO CONDITIONAL to talk about things that are usually true.

example:

If I am thirsty, I drink water.

HOW IS IT FORMED???

IF I AM THIRSTY , I DRINK WATER.

IF + SUBJECT + PRESENT SIMPLE , SUBJECT + PRESENT SIMPLE.

more examples:

If it rains, we get wet.

If you feel tired, you rest.

1. FIRST

We use the FIRST CONDITIONAL to talk about things that may happen in the FUTURE or to make PREDICTIONS.

example:

If I have time, I will go to the cinema.

HOW IS IT FORMED???

IF I HAVE TIME , I WILL GO TO THE CINEMA.

IF + SUBJECT + PRESENT SIMPLE , SUBJECT + WILL / WON'T

more examples

If you go to the party,I will see you there.

If you don't eat the soup now, it will get cold.

NOTE

IF can be exchanged for WHEN.

If it rains, I get wet. = When it rains, I get wet.

Example:

The order of both parts of the sentence can be changed.

Example:

If it rains, I get wet.

I get wet, if it rains.
