Something happened in the past and this action is finished. Affirmative: 2nd column in the conjugation of English verbs(Regular-Irregular) Negative/Interrogative: Auxiliar DID + verb (After WHEN you always use Past Simple Tense)

You called me last night You did not/didn´t call me last night Did you call me last night?

Something was happening in the past. Past verb To Be (Was/Were) + another verb + ing ( After While you always use Past Continuous)
