“Renilde! Where are you?” called Alessandro as he got home after working in the _ _ _ _ _ _ __ all day. “I’m out here on the patio, Alessandro,” answered his wife. “I am reading to the baby”. She patted her large stomach lovingly. Alessandro laughed. “You are silly! The baby isn’t even born yet! Do you think he can hear you already?” “I don’t know,” Renilde replied. “But I am going to make _ _ _ _ he or she gets as much education as possible. So why not start right now?” Alessandro was proud of his young wife. She was one of the few people in their small village that had gone to school and knew how to _ _ _ _ and write. In Chiaravalle, Italy, in 1869, that was very unusual, especially for a woman. Girls grew up learning how to help their mothers clean, cook, and take care of babies. Boys went to school.

Now, she hoped her baby could have the same opportunity. She smiled up at her husband and said, “This baby will be a very smart girl. We will call her Maria. One day, she will be a _ _ _ _ _ _ _.” Alessandro laughed. “This baby”, he said firmly, “will be a very smarts boy called Mario. And one day, he will be a doctor.” Renilde and Alessandro knew that whether their baby was a boy or a girl, they would love it and make sure it had a good education. Their healthy little girl was born in the _ _ _ _ _ _ of 1870. They named her Maria. As she grew, both parents were happy to see how smarts she was and how quickly she learned. Maria’s mother read to her every day. One day, when Maria was not quite 4 years old, she said, “Mama, it’s my turn! I will read to you!” Renilde was amazed when Maria took the _ _ _ _ and began to read out loud. “She must go to school!” Renilde insisted.

But Alessandro said she was much too little. Renilde knew he was right. There were no preschools or kindergartens in Italy in 1874. Most children did not go to school until they were 7 or 8 years old. They had to be big enough to use chairs and tables that were made for grown-ups. So, Maria stayed at _ _ _ _ with her mother. She quickly learned how to sew and knit. She enjoyed helping her mother cook. Always, she was watching and learning. And always, Renilde was teaching and explaining. When Maria was finally big enough to go to _ _ _ _ _ _, she was far ahead of other children. She put into classes with much older students. That did not scare Maria at all! She learned more quickly than anyone else. She was a leader in class and on the playground. She even helped the teacher with students who had trouble in reading and math. You will make a wonderful teacher when you grow up,” Renilde told her proudly.

Maria smiled at her mother. “You always say that, Mama! But you know what I really want to be when I grow up?” Maria’s eyes sparkled with excitement. “A _ _ _ _ _ _!”Renilde looked at Maria’s happy face. “I am sure you would be a great doctor”, she told her daughter. Alessandro wasn’t so sure. “A doctor!” he exclaimed. “Impossible! There are no female doctors in Italy!”“Why not? Asked Maria. Her father shook his head sadly. “The medical schools are for me only,” he told her. “There are no school for woman to _ _ _ _ _ medicine. Maybe you can marry a doctor.” Maria stamped her foot. “I don’t want to marry a doctor! I want to be a doctor! And I know I can be one. And I will be!”Alessandro looked at his young daughter. He saw her energy and her stubborn attitude. He saw great intelligence in her glowing eyes and in her proud expression. “My dear Maria,” He said, “if you think you can _ _ _ _ _ _ the first female doctor in Italy, then I do not doubt you will do it.”

Renilde said, “I always wanted you to be a teacher. But just imagine-my daughter, the first female doctor in all of Italy- Dr. Maria Montessori! How exciting that would be!”As Maria’s father predicted, it wasn’t easy to follow her dream. But in 1896, at the age of 26, she received her medical degree. She became the first female doctor in Italy. Not only that, but she became a teacher too, just as her mother had always wanted. Dr. Maria Montessori became famous throughout the world. She was even nominated three times for the Nobel Peace Prize! She spread her belief that very young children can learn. Her ideas came to be known as the “Montessori Method”. Today, thousands of schools all over world use her method. Renilde Montessori, who read books to her baby even before she was born, had a dream that her child might be a teacher. Her husband, Alessandro, hoped for a son who could one day be a doctor. Little did they know that their daughter, Maria using intelligence and determination, would make both their dreams, and her own, come true.
