SYMBOLS OF THE EUROPEAN UNION
‘Joined in diversity’ is the motto of the European Union; It means that in the EU Europeans are employed together for the peace and the prosperity of all the member countries, and that the numerous and diverse cultures, traditions and languages in Europe are very valuable assets for the continent.
‘Joined in diversity’
Europe Day (9th May)
This day symbolizes the success of the EU. It exists to celebrate the peace and the stability of the EU and the European citizenship of its member states.
It is the sign of identity par excellence; It symbolizes the ideal of unity, solidarity and harmony between the countries of Europe. On a blue background there are twelve golden stars. It does not mean the number of flagmember states.
The Flag
It is the only currency that is shared by 17 EU countries. These countries form the euro zone. The Euro was introduced in 1999.
The EURO
It comes from Ludwig van Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, composed in 1823. In 1972 the European Council passed it as the anthem of the EU. ‘Ode to Joy’ is part of the last movement of the Ninth Symphony. It expresses the ideals of freedom, peace and solidarity, without the need of words. In 1981 it was adopted as the official anthem.
The Anthem
We celebrate the Europe day with all the students of IES Pando playing the 'Ode of Joy'.
