01 THE SOLAR SYSTEM

The SOLAR SYSTEM is in the MILKY WAY galaxy. It is just a small part of the UNIVERSE.

01.

The solar system

The SUN is a star. It is at the center of the Solar System. It emits light and heat, essental to life on Earth. The PLANETS and their SATELLITES, comets and asteroids all move around the Sun.All of them make up the SOLAR SYSTEM.

02 The movements of the Earth

REVOLUTION

ROTATION

The earth moves in two ways: ROTATION & REVOLUTION.

02.

The movements of the Earth.

ROTATION

The earth spin on its own axis. This is an invisible lines that goes from the North to the South Pole. It takes one day (24 hours) to make one complete rotation. This is why we have day and night. It is day on the part facing the Sun. It is night on the other side.

02.

The movements of the Earth.

REVOLUTION

The earth also revolves or moves around the Sun.It takes one year (365 days and 6 hours) to make one complete revolution. This revolution causes seasons.

02.

The movements of the Earth.

THE SEASONS

Spring starts on 21st March: Days and nights are a similar length. Temperatures are mild.Summer starts on 21st June: Days are longer than nights. Temperatures are hot.Autumn starts on 23rd September: Days and nights are a similar length. Temperatures are cool.Winter starts on 21st December: Days are shorter than nights. Temperatures are cold.

03 The movements of the Moon

The Moon is the Earth's only natural satellite. Like the Earth, the Moon alsmo moves in two ways (rotation & revolution). It takes 28 days to complete one rotation on its axis and to revolve around the Earth.

03.

The movements of the Moon.

The Moon has four main phases:- New moon.- First quarter.- Full moon.- Third quarter. At each stage, we see the Moon differently from Earth. It appears to change shape.

04 The cardinals points

The cardinal points are north, south, east and west. They help us to know our location and to give directions. On maps we see the letters N, S, E, W.Differents divices helps us know in which direction we are travelling:

  • GPS.
  • Compass.

04.

Cardinal points

A compass is an object with magnetic needle. It tells us where the cardinal ponts are.

A GPS is a system that determines our location and gives us directions. We use it to find ourway to places.

05 World maps and globes

MAPS

Maps show the Earth as flat. There are lots of imaginary lines on a world map which help us locate different places on the Earth's surface.

05.

World maps and globes

05.

GLOBES

Globes are spheres that give us a realistic, three dimenisonal view of the wold. They show how the world is tilted on its axis. The Earth's axis goes through the North pole and the South Pole.Globes also show us the correct shape, size and distances of land an water on Earth, but in smaller propotions.

World maps and globes

PHYSICAL MAPS

Physical maps show the location of important natural features, such as mountains, rivers and lakes. There are different colours to represent height and depth.

05.

POLITICAL MAPS

Political maps show land divided into diferent areas and countries. They also show the capital cities of countries and other important cities. The colours show the separete areas of land divided by political borders.

World maps and globes

05.

STREET MAPS

Street maps show smaller areas, such as a town or a a city. They show natural features, like parks and rivers. They also show man - made features such as hospitals, roads and parks. Maps help us find places we want to visit.

Project - Arts & Crafts

SOLAR SYSTEM

  1. Think in the project and make a list of the materials you need (box, cardboards, clay, sticks...)
  2. Distribute the materials into the members of the groupñ
  3. Make a list of different task you have to do and divide the work.
  4. LET'S DO IT: Make balls of different sizes abd shapes. Stick them with a thin a stick, name them...
  5. SHOW IT: Once you have finish your project, you have to make an oral presentation.
    1. Divide the planets among the members of the groups.
    2. Study your part.
    3. Explain to your classmates your project.
