The first edition

The first Eurovision Song Contest took place in 1956 in Switzerland. The Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium, Germany, France, Luxembourg, and Italy took part. Switzerland won.

It is the most followed non sporting event in Spain. In 2018, more than 8 million people were watching the final, around a 51.2% of share.

Nowadays

With the end of the Cold War, the contest increased their participants countries.

EUROvision?

For example, Israel and Australia are not from the European Union but they belong to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), so they can participate.

Spain

Our first time was on 1961. We reached the 9th position out of 16 countries.

8 years later...

We are the only country to win the contest twice in a row, in 1968 and 1969.

Masiel - La la la (1968)

Did you know that...Joan Manuel Serrat were going to sing instead of Masiel, but he wanted to sing in Catalan, so he couldn't do it because of the Franco's dictatorship.

Salomé - Vivo cantando (1969)

Portugal

Our neighbours had to wait 53 years to win an edition of the contest, with the song "Amar pelos dois" de Salvador Sobral.

We belong to the "Big Five", the five countries that most money provide to the contest. For this reason, these countries always reach the final.

Money, money...

The contest costs us more than 400.000 euros. Amazing, isn't it?

Do you recognise this woman?

She is Barei. The Spanish representative in the 2016 edition. It was the first time in history that Spain went to Eurovision with a whole song in English.
