SAP has gone through five distinct periods in its integration history. The first is when SAP uses C/C++ libraries, and IDOCs.

SAP XI is an integration builder that gets around coding. It sells well on the basis of overpromising, but within a few years declines as product as its overhead turns out to be quite large.

This was done to "reboot" the product and to account for licensing changes with SAP trying to charge for transactions pushed through PI.
